Stop Barking Dogs Free Ship
Is excessive barking a problem with your new pup? It's up to you to teach him when and where it's appropriate to bark. Here are some simple ways to stop puppy barking now.
Ignore Attention-Seeking Barking
Your new friend will whine and cry quite a bit for the first few days. This is perfectly normal behavior for a young dog who is away from his mother and littermates for the first time. Finding himself alone in a strange place is upsetting for him.
But no matter how pitiful he is, don't give him attention when he's whining or barking, or you may be setting up a life-long habit of nuisance barking. Wait until he stops barking before petting or cuddling him. But how to stop a barking puppy?
One way is to make a noisemaker from an empty pop can and a few pennies. Put the pennies in the can, and tape it shut. When your pup barks or whines, especially at night, shake the can at him. The sudden noise will startle him into silence. Shake the can every time he barks or makes noise.
This method is quite effective because he's not getting any attention from you, whether it's good or bad. All that happens when he barks or whines is that a loud noise happens that he doesn't like. He'll learn quickly that nuisance barking doesn't get him attention from you.
A very humane method for quieting a barking canine is to say "enough," and gently put your hand around his muzzle. This works because he can't bark with his mouth shut. He'll try to back away, or shake your hand off, so be prepared. Hold him by his collar so he can't get away. Hold his muzzle gently until he stops fighting you and is quiet. This shows that he's accepted your authority.
This technique teaches your puppy that you're in charge, and that you will enforce your position as leader. This is an important lesson for him to learn, and will help to prevent many dog behavior problems from arising in the future.
More Tips To Avoid Barking Problems
It's helpful to teach your pup to bark on command. This may seem counterproductive, but the second part of this idea is to teach him to stop barking on command. Now you've taken control of the situation by letting him know when it's appropriate to bark. Once again, he has to defer to your leadership.
Excessive barking is often due to the canine just having too much energy. Take him for long walks to burn off this extra energy, and to tire him out so he'll sleep when you're gone. Another plus to lots of walks is that he's introduced to new people and new situations, so he'll be less likely to bark at unfamiliar things.
A good puppy obedience school can be very helpful, as he'll learn to listen to you even when there are distractions around. You should also consider a good dog training course, too.
Now it's time to start putting these ideas into action. Stop puppy barking now, and your new friend will be a much happier and pleasant companion.
Stop Barking Dogs Devices
Sick of excessive dog barking at other dogs? Looking for ways to stop dog barking at other dogs? Dogs just love to bark. It's a perfectly normal thing for dogs to bark, just like humans speak. It is the only way in which a dog communicates his feelings to the outer world. However, to us humans it's often irritating.
Before we being, you need to understand the fact that you just cannot stop your dog from barking entirely and also that some barking is good to alert you of a danger to your property or to you. Before you wear your training pants and jump ahead to train your dog decide on how much barking is going to be okay with you and what types are going to acceptable.
Mentioned below are the top 6 tips on stopping dog barking at other dogs -:
- Identify the type of barking your dog does when other dogs are around. The bark might be based on fear, excitement, alert/warning or aggression. Once you spot the reason you can treat the symptoms in an improved way.
- Have your dog acquainted with as many other dogs as you can. This is imperative for dogs your dog is going to see regularly, such as your neighbor's & family member's dogs.
- Teach your dog to obey your commands and stop barking when you say "NO"
- Do not yell at your dog while you are training him. It's very easy to lose your patience. Understand the fact that you can't train your dog in a day or two. It's a gradual process and takes time for your dog to learn.
- Put your dog in situations where there are other dogs around him, so that he can get more used to them. If he starts barking at them you can get him used to stop barking when you command.
- Whenever your dog obeys your commands and behaves well make sure you reward his good behavior with a treat.
As you can see here stopping a dog from barking at other dogs can be a frustrating issue to deal with. When trying to learn how to stop dog barking at other dogs, a good dog training course can be very useful. You will want to look for the one that includes a free consultation with an experienced dog trainer.

QUESTION:
How do I get my neighbors dogs to stop barking? Do anti barking devices you can mount on your home work?
I would rather not call animal control. Has anyone tried those bark control devices??-
ANSWER:
Generally, anti barking devices have been known to work. They didn't work for me though! When my golden retriever was young, he barked constantly. The device I bought was a little bird house that let out a high pitched sound, inaudible to humans. It made my puppy bark even more.....but it's worth a shot. Your neighbors dogs may not be as determined as my little guy was.

QUESTION:
Is there a sonic (stop barking) device that will work on my neighbor's dogs?
If money was no object what type of sonic (or other) device could I buy that will work to stop my neighbor's dog from barking all day? The dogs are 2 houses away so I need a device with a long range. Thanks.-
ANSWER:
They make a deviceThe Bark Stop called that can be used in kennels and dog shelters. It is placed outside near the noise and puts out a sound that is irritating to the dogs when they bark. This will only work for nuisance barking not panic barking and protection barking. It costs about which to me is a fair price if it is guaranteed to work. It may depend on how close the dogs are to your home otherwise you may ahve to put it on a fence or tree to get the full effect from it.
Give it a try.

QUESTION:
do the devices to make dogs stop barking harm my turtle or any other pet like a rabbit???-
ANSWER:
Yes they will. A shock like that is very likely to kill your rabbit. Dogs have very tough skin on their necks so the pain is not as bad as it would be on other animals. However I believe it must hurt a great deal to stop the behavior.Rabbits can have a heart attack if scared to much. Something made for a dog is not for any other animal.

QUESTION:
Will a anitbark device stop my neighbors dogs from barking?
I have been looking at several antibark devices to stop the 5-6 dogs my neighbors have in their backyard from ruining my day by waking me up many times while I sleep.There are several on the market, including a few on EBay that have mixed feedbacks. Most all are automatic ultrasonic units. One did claim to be better because it was manually activated so other noises won't set it off.
I have worked with the police/court system on this before and got it to stop. Problem now is that after 1 1/2 of the dogs being stored inside their garage, they have built a fence. Now the dogs are in the backyard again barking.
However it is not as constant as when they were kept out there on chains before. It will be considerably harder to go to court with it this time since they don't bark over 10 minutes straight like before.They bark now for a few minutes and just about the time you go to sleep again they fire back up.
And no, killing them is not an option.
I have used ear plugs in the past. Generally I roll over and they fall out. I even tried the expensive wax kind that forms to your ear.I also have run a fan on high. Problem is the barking is so loud it won't begin to cover it up. Not even close. A TV set on really loud does good to be over top of it.
These aren't bark collars, they are boxes that emit sound when a dog barks.If they bark for longer periods I can file a civil suit. I was close a couple years ago when they agreed to put them in their garage.
My lawyer found a VERY similar case where the person in my shoes won and was the only complainer, right here in my state.
Does anybody here have an recommendations on a specific device? There are about 5 on the market that I see.-
ANSWER:
The neighbors will probably not be willing to put the anti-bark collars on their dogs. Many,not all,dog owners believe they are evil and bad as they shock the dog when it barks. You can try consulting a mediator. Personally,I would recommend ear plugs, background white noise(like a fan) or something to control YOUR environment. If you are worried about hearing a morning alarm clock there is an option of a vibrating watch to wake you. I honestly wish you the best of luck! I'm proud of you for not considering any "permanent" solutions to the barking problem. Good Luck!

High frequency device to stop late night dog barking?
There are hiigh frequecy devices to stop dog barking up to 50 feet away. Is there one to stop late nignt dog barking a neighborhood block away. This would be the most humane thing to do. Instead of calling the cops, go down to the station and file a report.
Report them to animal control too.
Have you tried talking to them? Get a few neighbors together and go over. Bring baked goods to break the ice.

QUESTION:
Need device to stop barking dogs next door. Would like something in my yard that would react to the bark.?-
ANSWER:
My husband and I have 2 Siberian Huskies. We do not allow our dogs to annoy our neighbors. My husband works outside the home, and we also own our own business, which I run out of our home. I am home alot so the dogs are mostly inside the house (they are extremely spoiled) with me. When they are outside, the minute they make a sound, I let them back in the house. I wish I could say the same for our neighbors. One of our neighbors has two small dogs that yap constantly. We live in a fourplex, so there is our house and 3 other houses all in a row. What amazes me is that if I can hear their dogs yapping from 3 houses down, how come they (and they are home most of the time in the evenings when the dogs yap the most) can't seem to hear them yapping in their own backyard? Never could figure that one out. Anyway, my husband just goes down and knocks on their door and asks them to take their dogs inside their house. This usually solves the problem for us. That and the fact that we all have the same landlord, and I'm sure they are smart enough to realize that if they don't quiet their dogs, our next step would be to complain to the landlord, and failing that, we would complain to the police until they got tired of hearing from us!

QUESTION:
do dog whistles actually make a dog stop barking?
I have 5 weenie dogs and when they all get to barking, it will actually make you think your eardrums are rattling. I was wondering if any of you have had any success with any anti-barking devices and what kind you used, and if you have a special website I could go to.Thanks!
What about those devices that emit a sound only they can hear? Been looking at something called a dazer. Then they have these collars that will spray citronella when they bark.-
ANSWER:
A dog whistle will not stop a dog from barking, but if you train the dog to come to you when you blow the whistle, then in theory if it is barking, you should be able to call it to you and reward it when it stops the obsessive barking.That said, the pitch of a dog whistle is sometimes enough to break the focus of a barking dog. They're not used to hearing things at that pitch, so when they do, they look for the source but only for a moment. If you only blow the whistle to stop the barking and don't actually use it in conjunction with a command such as sit, or come, then they will only pause in the barking for a brief moment, and eventually it will have no effect whatsoever.
Train the dogs to come when you blow the whistle. Associate the whistle with great treats, but teach them that they need to be next to you to get the treats. (You have dachshunds, so food should be enough to motivate them.) You need to make sure that they have a totally reliable recall with the whistle before you introduce the concept when they are distracted by barking. Once you call them when they're barking, you have to correct them immediately if they start barking again. Make them come to you and sit for their treats, make them give YOU their attention, not whatever they're barking at. If they woof, tell them, "No," and don't treat them till they are calm and focussed on you again.
It can work, but it's not an immediate fix.
ADD:
The citronella bark collars are a temporary solution, until the dog decides to bark anyway. Once they overcome the shock of the spray, all the collar does is desensitize them to other possible corrections. Bark collars don't train a dog. They just put a bandaid over the issue. Once you start using those things, you can never take them off.

QUESTION:
how can i stop my dogs barking without buying an expensive device?-
ANSWER:
two ways I have learned to stop my dogs from barking excessively.
Figure out why they bark..if it is noise from sirens..other dogs barking..then expose them to it regularly so they won't care..Take them away from the neighbors.. and play the noise ..via a laptop or recording..you can get the sound effects from youtube or limewire at your own risk of course..or even on a tv show.
praise them when they sit quietly with treats... ignore them when they make the noise..show them the treat and don't offer them any...for infractions..The other way.. teach your dog to bark on command..
use the noise to get them to bark.. praise them.. then use a hand gesture.. during the noise..praise them for responding with noise and then gesture..once they have mastered that..
then remove the noise and only use the gesture..praise only when they bark for the gesture..
soon they will bark just for the gesture and will look for it.. give them great praise .. and practice the gesture with them..for fun..
when the noise occurs . they usually will not bark.. just to please you...
However if you have terriers good luck..

Are you familiar with dog stop barking device?
.....If so I am considering getting one. It is a product of Four Paws and is a sonic device that is supposed to help make them stop barking. I hope it just helps training and is not a device that affects their vocal cords. Does it work? Every little noise, car going by, four wheeler, air plane and its worse if it happens at night. My only hesitation about getting it is that it states it "allows panting and drinking". Why that and how does it affect the other parts of his body? Is this the only one that does this? Hollering does not help. Are they any good or am I wasting my money? Please no nasty remarks.-

QUESTION:
How to you make a dog stop barking?
I live in an apartment building, and in the building across from mine, there is always a yappy dog barking the backyard. Today it was barking for more than 3 hours straight early in the morning. I do not know anyone in the other building, but I can hear the dog clearly through my window. Are there devices that emit a high-frequency sound and makes dogs be quiet? My neighbor across the floor also has a dog who barks whenever the neighbor leaves. Hopefully this solution can deal with both.-

Call the police. The dog is certainly violating any noise ordinances in your area.You could also make a complaint to that building's management company. I doubt you'd be the first-the other residents must be reporting this little yappy pest as well.

QUESTION:
Do anti barking devices work?
We have an extremely annoying neighbor behind us. Their dogs bark a lot from the morning until the afternoon. When the dogs stopped, you enjoy the silence only for a short time. They bark for several minutes then they stop, after a break they bark again. It continues for hours.I read online, that I could buy an anti barking unit for my back yard. But I read that it does not work. They have a wall around their yard. An anti barking collar might work.
I wrote them notes several times. They don't care and let them bark. I have to call animal control. On their web site their wrote: “Unlawful barking is defined as a period of five (5) minutes of barking during a 15-minute interval at any time of day."
An example: The dog starts to bark at 8 AM and barks for 3 minutes, stops and at 8:10 he barks for 2 minutes. Would that count 5 minutes?
In our old neighborhood was a big dog. When he barked, his voice was deep. If he barked for 5 minutes it was not that irritating. When our new neighbor's dogs bark, it's a very squeaky high sound that drives you crazy even if he barks just for seconds.I hate this neighbor, who destroys our life. He is a public nuisance by disturbing our peace, comfort, health and repose. We can never go into our back yard because that would start dog barking.
Do anti barking collars work?
-
ANSWER:
First of all, no anti barking collars do not work, and they are not pleasant for the dog.Also, since it is not your dog, I doubt you can convince your neighbour to use one on its dog.
I would video tape a few hours of the annoying dog, to show animal control when you call them. Without proof they don't normally do anything.

QUESTION:
How to get a dog to stop barking without using any kind of device?
My dog won't shut up,, he barks for nothing how do i get him to stop?-
ANSWER:
If you have attempted to train your dog verbally, then your remaining options are surgery to lower the tone of your dog's bark {debarking} or purchasing a no bark collar & training the dog what behavior is expected of it.Far better to train the dog & not have it aggravate you {& possibly your neighbors} with persistent barking which is nuisance behavior & if that fails consider surgery, than carry on as you are.

QUESTION:
Is using an ultrasonic sound to stop dog barking cruel? Please help!?
I have a 2 year old toy american eskimo who loves to bark. My boyfriends dad bought him this device that makes an ultrasonic sound to try to get him to stop barking. I would rather train him with a water bottle, and rewards, but my boyfriend feels the sound device is necessary. Our eskimo is already a nervous wreck, if you drop a spoon on the floor he'll hide under the couch for like an hour. I feel this sound will just make him more nervous, and ruin his character. Please help!-
ANSWER:
In my experience, the ultrasonic collars did not work at all. My dogs totally ignored them. Therefore, I don't think your dog will be bothered by this device.Water bottles (and squirt guns) only work when you are right there with the water bottle. When you are at work, at school or even in the bathroom, the water bottle method is useless. The dog will RAPIDLY learn that when you aren't there to squirt him, it's safe to bark.
Electric shock collars are horrible. They make some dogs screech and scream and bark MORE. They are cruel.
Citronella spray collars work great. Since dogs don't flee the room when a person eats an orange or tangerine (but may instead pause to sniff the fruit), you can tell that citronella, which smells faintly of citrus , doesn't have a painful or cruel effect on the dog's nasal passages. It is just a smell that dogs dislike.
I bought my citronella spray collars at petedge.com. I advise you to buy at least one (more are better) extra can of refill spray. You will need it. Anti-bark collars do not teach a dog anything except not to bark while the collar is on and functioning.

QUESTION:
Anything you can do about neighborhood dogs barking?
I got dogs that bark seemingly non-stop during the day and at night. They're good and friendly dogs, I love them and I don't want my neighbor's to get rid of them. And truthfully, there is really not much my neighbor's can do about it...so talking to them is out. Any humane way of making them stop...like a whistle, or anti-bark device? Anybody got experience on what "does" work? thx-
ANSWER:
It's lack of training by the owners.Calling the police is your only option but,then it's the dog that will end up paying for it.I don't believe in the shock collar thats cruel,how'd you like to wear one?
If you love them like you say,,learn to ignore,or teach them to hush since their owners won't.Trust me I've yelled out the window in the middle of the night at my neighbors dogs!

Why did you get her? Before you go to work take her out to play somewhere. When you get home take her out and about again. Take her to work with you and on your lunch break take her out for a walk. If you are considering a "Market Device" you are not ready for the responsibility of being a doggie parent.

QUESTION:
Ultrasonic Device for barking dogs?
My neighbor recently complained aboutmy barking dachshund. Has anyone in here ever tried using an ultrasonic device called Bark Free or Super Bark Stop? Is this effective for dachshunds. I only leave my dog for 4 or five hours at a time but my neighbor complains about every little noise he hears. I think if I sneeze outside his door, he'll complain about that too. Anyways, I would like to know if this is worth buying.-
ANSWER:
They give them a jolt when they bark. They sell ones that will put out a spray of citronella that dogs don't like. Try going with the more humane one first.

QUESTION:
What do you recommend to get a dog to stop barking?
I have two dogs, a one year old female and a two year old male. The female barks every time she goes outside.. at squirrels, neighbors, leaves blowing in the wind. The male mostly only barks inside when he sees other cars or cats on our street. We've tried behavioral/reinforcement training but we've found it's nearly impossible to be with the dogs every time they bark, so they don't get the consistent punishment or reward. We want to get one of the devices to stop the barking, but I'm not sure if it would be better to get an outdoor device to mount to a tree or to get a collar. Our female gets scared and shaky very easily, and I'm scared a shock collar may make her terrified. On the other hand, we really need something both inside and outside. Any particular device or brand you all recommend?-
ANSWER:
The citronella collar worked for my sensitive dog. He hates the stuff spraying in his face. Now, all I do is put the collar on him and he is quiet.
A neighbor taught her VERY yappy Sheltie to be quiet by using a spray bottle with just water in it. The dog hated being sprayed in the face with the water bottle and after a couple of weeks learned to not bark.
The can with rocks or pennies will work with some dogs too.
However, a collar that works on it's own like the citronella collar or a shock collar is the most reliable way to stop barking when you can't be there 24/7. The citronella collar does not work on all dogs. Some will just continue to bark with it on and soon empty the canister of citronella. I'd suggest you get a good quality shock collar. These have very low settings and increase the shock if the dog continues to bark.

QUESTION:
Bark Buster a sonic training device to curb barking dogs?
The Bark Buster is a training device that emits a harmless yet high-pitched sonic pulse each time your dog barks (or the neighbor's dog barks). It's inaudible to humans, but quite noticeable to dogs! Your dog will learn to control barking without shock collars or other painful methods. i was wondering if this causes any harm to a dog? also if anyone owns one does it work?here's how it works.not that i own it mind you. you do not teach the dog rather the pulse activates once the dog barks and shuts off when they stop.
secondly its a portable device so when you go for a walk u take it with you.
thirdly it turns off when they stop barking.-
ANSWER:
they don't work well, the sell the ones that are voice activated too, it only works if you have one of those outside and you want to keep pests away. Even then that technology isn't very good because some humans are sensitive to it.

I have heard of sonic devices which send out high pitched alarms which stop a barking dog.
Our dog is outside has shelter and food and is walked regularly but the barking is becoming a nuisance I`m sure to the neighbours.

QUESTION:
has anyone tried and ultrasonic bark stop device with their dog?
My dog barks at everything. I don't want him to bother the neighbours all day long. has anyone had any luck with an Ultrasonic Bark stop system? I tried a citronella colar and it worked short term untill he got used the the smell.-
ANSWER:
My friends have a young pup that has figured out how to get around the piercing sound it makes when she barks loud - she just barks softer! So on top of the barking you have the sound it makes (that all can hear).It just seems to be a substitute for the Dog Whisperer.

QUESTION:
Does any one else disagree with that device that's suppose to stop your dog from barking?
I ask a question earlier about dogs eating chocolate and received some nasty responses in regards to my animal etiquette. I LOVE ANIMALS!
Just an amateur with dogs. Thanks.-
ANSWER:
Hi vindic8,Well, I didn't see your question on dogs and chocolate. I will tell you that it may kill your dog.
As far as those devices are concerned, it's been documented that they are hurting those animals.
There was a case of someone going to court and demanding the owner of the barking dog get that device, he got an animal activist attorney and won. Well I guess there are still people trying to protect innocent animals out there. I would never do that to a dog!Best2u,

QUESTION:
Is there a Sonic Device that I can use to emit the Sounds that can stop Dog Barking 24/7?...?
...Wanting to get rid of the Dog.
There's a Crazy Dog next door barking at 24/7. Trying to reason with the Owner, who then threatened us with his Dog. We are now thinking if there's some Sonic Device that can emit the Anti-Barking Sounds 24/7, rather than when the Dog barks, so that the Owner can remove his Dog next door from our place?-
ANSWER:
Second, you can go thru the city code department and thru the local humane society to have the dog's nuisance factor documented. I'm always a fan of doing things legally, despite the extra time involved, because that way things don't circle back around and bite me in the rear. Have a good chat with your city about its laws regarding nuisance dogs and how they are enforced.
Third, yes. Dogs hear in a range well above human hearing (dog whistles use this fact) and some areas will sell electronic devices as pest control (because insects also hear at frequencies above human ability.) These are usually designed to force critters to leave an area where they are plugged in, turned on, and transmitting. Their usefulness for something as far away as next door is unknown. Theoretically, you could experiment with this. If the owner finds out, of course, there will be violence and lawsuits, and that latter is why point #2 is up there.

QUESTION:
How can I stop my neihbor's dogs from barking at me when I go out onto the deck of my house?
Is there an effective device that I can use? Of course, I've already spoken to the dog's owner.
That didn't help.-
ANSWER:
If you have already spoken with the owner, and they won't do anything about it, it's time to file a complaint with animal control or the police. When your neighbor starts getting fines for noise violations and not properly controlling their dogs, they'll do something about it.

QUESTION:
How do I defend myself against unreasonable complaints about my dogs barking from neighbors?
I have a three year old lab. She is very nice. My neighbor on one side loves the dog and has no problem about the ocasional barking (for casue). However, the neighbor on the other side hates dogs and wants the dog not to bark at all. She calls the police when I am not there. They give me verbal warning if they are there when I get home or leave a note when I am not there.How do I deal with this? I think I am being harresed. Is there a way that I can document and support that I am being harresed and take actions against this neighbor? Everytime I am home, the dog spends most of her time outside (she prefers to roam around outside as we have a very large yard) and would bark only if she sees a racoon or other animial or if she is playing with the kids. She does not engage in continuois barking for no apparent reason. I think it would be inhumane to use devices to completely stop barking.
I would like to hear from dog owners who have had this problem themselves. Thanks
I think most of the folks repsonding are missing the point. I am not asking for your opinion as to who is right. I have alreasdy made the following conslusions :1) My neighbor's complaints are unreasonable (other neighbot's do not have a problem, it is just this one)
2) Dogs will bark (non-dog owners will not understand this - you can not keep dogs completley quite).
Would like to hear from dog owners only please. The questions again is : What can I do about the neighbor's (only one neighbor) unreasonable compalint to the police? Let us try this again.
I think, I got my answer, although most of you missed the point. An independent evaluation, as recommended by one of the respondants, by an animal expert is what I need to do. I will try that. Thanks.-
ANSWER:
I, too, was turned in for my dogs barking. They are trained as fence dogs to carry on at the fence line when something or someone come walking by.When my dogs barked there was always a reason.
Head of Animal Control for the County came out to check me out cause of so many complaints. She stood at my fence line & we talked for about 45 minutes. The dogs barked at her for a while, maybe 5 minutes, they barked at a cat 3 or 4 houses down, they barked while a neighbor got into his vehicle & drove away.
When she left she said she saw nothing wrong here & it reminded her of her yard. Barron & full of dogs. I had 4 or 5 dogs at the time. She said, "Dogs bark, that is what dogs do." They don't moo, meow, nay, cluck or squeak. They bark, they are dogs.
The neighbors think I know higher ups cause nothing ever came from any of their complaints.
Maybe this is of some help.

QUESTION:
The sonic device which sits on the table and stops dogs from barking - would it work on a cat's loud meow?
The cat meows VERY loudly, fairly often. Would the sonic device work, and if so, would it be safe and humane? or would it harm the cat, or hurt his ears? Don't want to distress him.-
ANSWER:
No it wouldn't work. Anyway that training is very bad.. you treat the barking with unplesant sensations. That dosen't help the dog.. you should reward the dog for not barking.Lovee,

Stop Barking Dogs Collars
A number of pet owners today make an effort to prevent their dogs from generating nuisance barking with the help of an anti bark dog collar. They think that the employment of a dog training course is too long 00004000 or the training expense is expensive. Some believe that their dog is so stubborn in order to be trained by any other way. The fact is that most dogs can control their barking without you having to use any anti bark dog collar.
First of all, you should know that anti bark dog collars nowadays use high pitched sound, static shock, or natural oil in order to control irritating barking from a dog. Whenever your dog barks above a certain decibel, vibrations generated from his barking will move through the collar and activate it. Once your dog gets irritating corrective signals, he will tend to stop the barking so that he can stay away irritating jolts as much as possible.
A lot of pet trainers report that the anti-bark collars work perfectly for them in most case, but there are still some issues when using these kinds of collars. The first one is the training cannot remain its result in a long period of time if you stop using the collar. Manufacturers that create these no bark collars also say that the dogs must wear the collar regularly in order for his barking to be controlled effectively. It is also cruel and unhumane if you intend to use a shock collar since these collars work by releasing electric shock, which can hurt the dog. Just think about how you feel once you get this kind of shock from the collar. The next disadvantage of using a no bark dog collar is most of the collars cannot find out the difference between an irritating barking and helpful barking. If the dog barks, he gets corrective signals. This means if there is a robber trying to get into your house, the dog will not generate any alert notice because of punishment he gets from the collar. This is really a last thing you want to happen, right?
With that being said, you should consider carefully before deciding to use any dog bark control aid in order to prevent nuisance barking. It is true that bark control training course can work on almost any kind of dogs. Besides, the training is usually affordable and provides quick results. There are situations that a dog can be trained in a few days. If you are short for money, you can choose to invest in training manuals, which are inexpensive instead of spending money on expensive behavior training classes.

QUESTION:
Do the dog collars that stop dogs from barking with sound realy work?
I want to buy a dog collar that could stop my dog from barking. There are these dog collars on eBay that are supposed to stop dogs from barking with some sound that only dogs could hear. If you have any experience with these collars and know if they work or not them please reply.-
ANSWER:
Yes, they do..The one who mentioned sores on the skin was an electric collar, not a sonic (high pitched buzz) one. . I used one for a very traumatized rescued dog, that just couldn't stop barking..She quit within a couple of days, and I took the collar off after less than two weeks..I have loaned it to many friends, as well.
It didn't harm the dog in any way. She is curled here at my feet 10 years later..and only barks if a stranger is here..
I got mine at Walmart..They currently run .

QUESTION:
Do the electric collars really stop dogs barking?
I have two dogs soon to be three who will all live outside. They are all big dogs and bark quite load and often. The neighbvours are starting to complain. I was wondering about thoses electric collars its seems cruel but thought id ask around see what everyone else thinks or has used them. Thanks
To all who are goin crazy about my dogs being outside. First of all they receive 3 hour long walks a day are well fed and definately not mistreated being outside. I ahve 2 German Shepherds and one Dogue de Bordeaux and it is not feasable to keep all of them indoors.
They have a more than sufficient sized Kennel with heating might I add and a very large run which takes up my whole garden area.
People forget that dogs were only introduced to houses in the 60's and that at the end of the day they are animals not people. You are being even more cruel by mollycoddling your dog pretending its a human. Ruining it health feeding it rubbish. My dogs do not lack love or affection and are the most well behaved dogs u will ever meet. So do not judge me on my preference 2 keep dogs outside when most of you probably have a fat yappy untrained house dog.
As 4 the collar, I am not keen on the idea but as Im moving 2 a posh area with larger garden again 4 my again i want them to be very quiet.-
ANSWER:
Sometimes the bunny huggers are just to funny on here.
Here ,, think about this!
"there is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance --- that principle is contempt prior to investigation."
Herbert SpencerWhen used as intended there is nothing cruel about electric bark collars. They give the dog the choice, they quickly understand that when they have the collar on that barking has consequences.
The problem with bark collars is that "they quickly understand that when they have the collar on". It's called becoming 'collar wise'. One thing dogs are not is stupid, and it will only take a day or two for a dog to figure out when it can bark and when it can not. So while bark collars can be effective to an extent, a person is still far better off to teach their dog to be quiet 'on command'.

QUESTION:
How do you stop dogs barking?
My dog is 2 and a half and won't stop barking! We've tried for A G E S and he's unstoppable!
Many people recommend bark collars. Done that with expensive and cheap collars, it doesn't work. Others recommend lightly taping him on the nose when he's inside but he tries to bite me. When he's outside, he doesn't do recall, he has "selective hearing." He also barks an awful lot at the cats and chases them.Anyone got any ideas on stopping his barking that doesn't include expensive bark collars?
Thanks in advance
-
ANSWER:
First off, DO NOT use a shock collar! They are inhumane and painful for the dog. Seriously, anybody heard the words "animal cruelty"? There's a simple and humane way to make his barking habit better. When he barks, make a loud "Ep!" noise. If you are consistent and make that noise every time he barks, he'll eventually get the memo and stop. As for the situation with the cats, you'll have to A.) chase them out of the yard yourself before the dog gets close to them, B.) Hold the dog back and apply the "sit" command until the cat leaves, C.) Call animal control if the cats are strays to have them removed from the area and sent to good homes, or D.) Fence in your yard if it isn't already.Do your dog a favor and leave the shock collars out of it; doing it this way will be more of a hassle on you, but it is well worth it in the future when you find the end result to be a well-behaved dog.

QUESTION:
How do I make my dog stop barking without using dog collars( electic)?
I want my dog to stop barking but not using dangerous methods.
My dog is A German Shepard X Kelpie she is currently 4 years old.
My dog is dangerous to outside people.
My dog is a loving and affectionte dog.-
ANSWER:
To stop your dog barking at intruders, you must remove eitherthe intruder or the dog from the situation. Often this behaviour
can be stopped simply by going to the dog and reassuring
her that everything is okay, when there is no intruder. Make
sure that you praise the dog when she does warn you
appropriately of strangers.
~~~~Teaching your dog not to bark at strangers (the
paperboy, mailman) is harder to do, because you need the
person's cooperation. You need to gradually introduce them
on a daily basis to the dog which is restrained by your side.
(This is only advisable if your dog is friendly and doesn't pose
a danger to the individuals you are trying to introduce.)
Otherwise, you could get the "intruder" to slip your dog a treat
through the mail slot in your door. Gradually the dog should
learn to recognize them as friends rather than intruders, and
not feel the need to bark.
QUESTION:
Has anyone ever used the dog collars that claim to stop barking?
I have a beagle pup (4 months) and we have received an informal complaint about his barking and yelps early in the morning (0500-0600) Searched the net and have found two types, the slight shock ones when the dog barks or the high pitched sound that only dogs can hear. Anyone got any advice on either? I would prefer not to use anything, but with both my wife and I working full time I don't want to upset the neighbours. Apart from the early morning barks he is perfect. Thanks in advance-
ANSWER:
I tried the shock collar but it turns the pup into a mean thing or it can break their spirit almost, though I never tried the sound ones I do hear that its most effective from my neighbor who uses it.
QUESTION:
former question, how to you stop dogs from barking? where to you buy shock collars?
As I do not work, the three small terrier dogs are not left alone in the house all day, they are taken out three times a day. The dogs are only left for a few hours each week inside the house, with plenty food and water, whilst I go shopping, go to the dentist and doctors etc. I apologise if I came across as being rude, but I was trying to relate my neighbour's situation, in that it may give me some insight to why she always complains about the dogs in the spring. The lady does not work next door as she is retired, and I have taken into considersation that she is not as young as she use to be, hence the reasons why my husband and myself have bent over backwards to try to accommadate our neighbour. One day she tells me that she has no problem with the dogs, only to be told differently from another neighbour that she has a problem with the dogs a few days later. Thank-you for all your answers and I will invest in the shock collars for the three dogs. Healthwise both us are now fit.-
ANSWER:
I wouldn't go the shock collar route. You really have to be there to supervise the dogs for it to work. It's not a good idea to leave your dogs out when you aren't home. There's too many wackos these days. Small terrier dogs are easily stolen for use as bait dogs for Pit Bull training. Kids can tease them or neighbors can poison them. I didn't mean to be rude to you either. I just thought the dogs were out in the yard barking all day. I have neighbors like that and their whiny kids are just as bad.....
QUESTION:
How do I get my dogs to stop barking?
My dogs bark nonstop and weve tried everything! They have muzzles and bark collars. HELP!-
ANSWER:
Have you tried bark-activated devices that spray citronella under your dogs mouth as he barks? They seem to make great deterrents and are totally humane.Because you have more than one dog, it might be more difficult to train them not to bark as it is a natural way for them to communicate. Maybe you can try rewarding them when they bark at the appropriate times and correct them when they bark when you don't want them to.
Do you know why they're barking all of the time? If you can figure it out and make a change to what's triggering the barking you might see a big difference, as well.
Good luck!
QUESTION:
Should I get a shock or citrus collar for my crazy psycho dog that won't stop barking at other dogs?
He is a maltese, 3 years old. I have tried so many times to train him but when he is outside, he doesn't see me or the ground or anything, he sees the dog and goes CRAZY and I can't do anything. When I snap the leash back he doesn't care, he keeps on barking like crazy and he won't stop until the dog is out of his sight. I want to get him a bark controlling collar which should I get?-
ANSWER:
Neither. Your dog is poorly socialized and not trained. The spray collar likely won't work and the electrocution collar will either cause your dog to shut down or to go even crazier.You hire a proper trainer and get the dog to listen to you and you learn how to correct and control the dog.
Until proper training has taken place, an electrocution collar has no place in your hands or on your dog.
Your question is like asking "My child cries when she sees Lost. What should I do, spank her or slap her?"
QUESTION:
Has anyone used one of those bark collars to stop their dog from barking?
i have just bought one after trying every thing else including water and this does not work either he barks at ever thing and every body can anyone help-
ANSWER:
Try it on yourself first, to see how much of a shock the dog is getting. It may not be enough for him to notice, or to have an effect. Or, it may not be making contact. Her fur may be insulating her from the electrodes.My sister had one for one of their dogs. It really worked - it got the dog's attention every time. But the dog could tell when she was wearing it, and when she wasn't. Her behavior got a lot better when they put it on her.
If the collar doesn't work, see if there's a barkbusters near you. They claim great results.
QUESTION:
Do anti-bark collars really work to stop barking?
Anyone have any experience with this device?
We have a Rottweiler that barks non-stop at a donkey that is in a pasture next to him. It's past the point of annoying...It's become an obsession and it's ridiculous.
We provide him with plenty of exercise, toys and chews galore as well as having another Rott as a companion.
There is no reason, other than obsessive barking that this dog is doing this...
Do these collars work or would I be wasting my $$?
The dog has grown up with the donkey, so it's not that he's being protective. It's simply become an obsessive game for the dog.
The dogs are in a solid fence 48' wide and 160' long. There are only 2 dogs in there, so there is plenty of room to run. They are on leash for about 40 mins each day when we go for our evening walks and off leash, playing in the lake and running through the pastures or being lazy in the grass as I garden or do other chores. They have a very nice lifestyle and are well cared for. This isn't a boredom issue... The dog in question is not yet 2 years old and our 4 year old Rott seems to be annoyed with the pups obsessive barking at the donkey as well.I do have a shock collar system that I had to purchase to reinforce my commands NOT to kill the poultry. (high drive-was necessary) BUT I can't be there in the middle of the night...24/7 to correct.
If the anti-bark collar works at night and early morning before breakfast (7am)
I think (hope) it will help him realize that he has many better things to do.
I just didn't want to invest in something that wasn't effective.
The donkey could stand right next to the dog lot/run all day, ignoring the dog and that dog would bark at him. Or, he could be out grazing in the pasture and that dog would be focused on him there too.
This is past the point of crazy.
Moving the kennel isn't an option because I think he would do the same with the cattle or even the goats.
It's just an obsession he's become accustom to and is in need of breaking from real quick.
)
Oh, and Ann.... You're correct, I DO inquire with others about a product prior to purchasing. I'd say that makes me pretty wise.
)Don't be so offended... Not everyone is going to think you're as intelligent as you think you are.
Bottom line is, "it is what it is"... right?
)-
ANSWER:
I have had a couple it didn't work on but usually they work very well.However; I don't consider it obsessive if you are leaving the dog outside in view of the donkey. I think you need to work with him to get him used to the "different" animal that he wants to make sure his famioly is aware it is still there.
QUESTION:
What is the best way to stop your two dogs from excessively barking?
I have two dogs, a pitbull/retreiver mix and black lab/retreiver mix, and the one is about 5 years old while the other is getting close to being 8. The main problem is that they have been raised in a household where there were hardly any visitors besides the mailman and a few friends etc. Now that we have moved, we have more people over and there is more excitement around the house. My two dogs do not stop barking. And they continue even if you tell them to stop and such, they go on and on. Eventually, if someone is in the house long enough, they will stop barking and rest...but then as soon as that person gets up to get a drink both dogs jump to their feet and start loudly barking once again. I was considering getting shock collars for them both to try and stop most of the barking but I wanted to get advice from you guys first. Thanks!-
ANSWER:
Barking is generally considered a normal behavior that most dogs display. Some breeds tend to bark more than others, and domesticated dogs seem to bark more frequently and for different reasons than wild dogs. Barking is, after all, a method by which dogs communicate with one another and with their human companions.
However, dogs that bark in excess can become annoying or downright disruptive to the general peace. Some cities have ordinances to govern the barking of dogs and assess fines or other penalties to people who own dogs that bark excessively. Barking has even been known to cause neighborhood disputes and subsequent court battles.It is prudent, therefore, to learn how to control your dog's barking. To do so, it is important to understand the reasons that dog bark.
Why Do Dogs Bark?
We've identified seven general reasons for barking. Each generates a different kind of bark with a unique sound.1. Barking to induce play. This bark is generally muffled, with accompanying tail wagging and the characteristic crouching with head lowered to the ground, hindquarters raised. Dogs will stop barking as the play proceeds. If you do not play with the dog, the animal will eventually give up and stop barking.
2. Barking to discipline young. This sound usually involves a snap and a sharp bark, uttered when puppies or younger dogs do something that irritates an older dog. The bark itself generally does not persist, as one or two warnings usually stop younger animals in their tracks.
3. Barking to warn of danger. This is a deep, repeated bark. The dog's tail will be motionless or lowered to the ground and the dog's forelimbs will be widely spaced on the ground. The barking will generally persist until the source of danger is removed or until the dog is able to retreat to a position of safety.
4. Barking to threaten intruders. This bark may include an angry growl. The dog may raise its hackles and the hair on its back and tail. The dog will plant all four feet squarely and assume a fighting stance. As the dog barks, the teeth and gums will be readily visible. To stop such a bark, you must either remove the intruder or remove the dog from the situation. Sometimes, stepping to the dog's side and assuring it that all is well will cause it to stop barking.
5. Curiosity barking. In general, this bark is displayed when there is some activity near a dog, but in such a place where the animal cannot have a good look. It is as if the dog is saying, "Hey, what's up?" The dog will display excitement and tend to pace erratically with a slightly wagging tail. To stop the barking, all you have to do is let the dog see what it is curious about.
6. Barking for companionship. This is an incessant, repetitive bark, accompanied by a relatively motionless tail and concentration toward the area most associated with the dog's owners. The solution to this type of bark is to spend more time with the dog and to allow the dog access to the area where humans spend their time. This bark is often displayed by dogs that are ignored, tied out by themselves or locked up alone.
7. Barking for reward. Finally, dogs can be inadvertently trained to bark and will persist with remarkable resistance. Barking can become associated with almost any activity that leads to reward. For instance, a dog that barks at garbage trucks because they intrude within its territory will learn that persistent barking leads to the disappearance of the trucks. This rewards the barking behavior, and a cycle is begun that is difficult to break. Persistent barking can then generalize to other objects-school buses, neighbors walking by, children on the way to school, the paper boy, mailman, milkman and so on. To break the cycle, it is necessary to interrupt the natural system of reward.
Solutions to Barking
The first five reasons for barking are rarely the cause of "excessive" or "annoying" barking. They are usually specific to certain situations and short-lived.The sixth and seventh reasons are those most likely to be considered problem barking, and they are not unrelated.
Barking for companionship can turn into barking for reward: The dog barks to get its owner's attention, the owner comes to the dog to tell it to be quiet, perhaps petting it or playing with it, and goes away again. The dog is quiet while the owner is there, but has learned that barking will bring the owner back. Thus the system of barking and reward is established.
A solution, again, is to spend more time with your dog and have it near you rather than tied up somewhere separate from you.
However, if your dog is separated from you and it begins to bark to get your attention, do not immediately go to the dog. It must learn that barking will not guarantee your presence.
By spending more time with the dog at regular intervals not instigated by barking, your dog will feel more assured that it will get sufficient attention from you and will not have as much inclination to bark for companionship.
How do you teach a barking dog to distinguish between friends and strangers?
The solution is to show the dog that certain individuals (garbage collectors, mailmen, milkmen) are, indeed, friends.
To accomplish this, the dog has to be introduced to these people and given an opportunity to get to know them. While this is not always practical, it is nonetheless a potential solution.
As you restrain your dog, stop delivery people and have a short conversation with them, letting them meet the dog for a brief period. Repeat and lengthen the process over the next few weeks.
Eventually, your dog should accept these individuals and all will be well until your regular mailman is sick and another takes his place.
What do you do with a dog that barks at guests in your house?
One solution is to take the dog to another room and give it something to do. Or, if the guest comes to your home often and you don't want to have to lock up the dog every time, work to gradually introduce one to the other. Have the guest get on his knees, pet the dog, offer it a treat, and more or less become part of the family. Let your dog establish the speed at which this relationship develops: Don't force it, or your dog may become alarmed by a "pushy" guest.
How do you deal with a dog that barks at the phone?
This is simply a case of a dog that has been reward- ed for barking at the phone ringing. When the dog barks, someone even- tually answers the phone and it stops ringing. To stop your dog from doing this, have a friend call and let the phone ring until the dog loses interest. Continue over a period of days, and in time the dog will learn that barking at the phone ac- complishes nothing.
Finally, what do you do with the dog that barks while you are away from home?
There are several possible solutions. One is to act as if you are leaving, then stand outside the door until the dog barks. When it does, return and scold it verbally. Another is to get your dog a cormpanion - but you might end up with two barkers!
A third is to use a sound-activated tape recorder. When the dog barks, the sound switch turns on the tape recorder for a minute. The tape plays your voice scolding the dog. Some systems can repeat as many as 45 times while you are away.
The best way to reduce your dog's barking is to pay attention to the reasons for the bark. If you can satisfy the dog's needs, barking will automatically be reduced. By the same token, learned barking can be extremely persistent. Internal rewards can cause the cycle to go on for years. The best solution is prevention, so be aware of the possibilities and work to stop problem barking before it starts.
When he barks I say "no" loudly and point at him but it seems like he thinks it's a game and it gets him going more.
he usually only barks when he's playing. Even if nobody is playing with him, he barks at his toys.-
QUESTION:
How to force a dog to stop barking?!?
Our two dogs love to run and play and BARK in the fenced backyard we have. They bark at squirrels, neighbors, everything! My neighbors want us to keep them in or stop the barking. What works the best? Are bark collars safe and effective? The dogs love their yard time so I need to get them to stop barking-
ANSWER:
Hi !!I have a small terrier dog and he used to love barking !! Unfortunatley our neighbours didn't love it and i can't blame them it is very annoying.
So we went onto e-bay and got a bark collar. It's very effective. The First time he barks, it beeps, the second time he barks the beep gets louder and longer and the third time he gets a small shock.
It may sound cruel, but it's not. It has worked wonders. I don't even have to use it any more. If he barks i just have to point my finger at him without saying a word and he stops.
We only used the collar for a few months and it's been the best €50 i've ever spend. Well worth it.
QUESTION:
How do I to find a dog training collar that really works to stop my dog from barking?
I have two dogs that when in the yard bark at everything. I have one Bark collar, but it does not seem to work most of the time.-
ANSWER:
Yard dogs tend to bark. Training and plenty of exercise work much better than any collar. I gave my dogs a dog door into a gated area in the house, as long as they had access into the house they did not bark overly much. Dogs hate being separated from their owner, and being put outside can make that worse.If they are just barking anytime they go out, I'd say find a trainer http://dogpro.org and exercise them more...off the property. Dogs get bored easily.
QUESTION:
How do I stop my dogs from barking like crazy?
Every 15 minutes or so, my dachshund and my jack russell go outside and bark at anything from a shadow, the wind, whatever it is...but it's almost always not anything worth barking like crazy at (in my opinion). This happens while we're home so I know it's not separation anxiety, which I know that they do suffer from. How can I stop this, with bark collars? I have a 3rd dog, another dachshund, who is mellow as can be and lays around all day. I'm concerned because I'm having a baby soon and I don't want the dogs to wake the baby up.-
They need exercise! Spend some time and take them for walks and play with them. They are bored.
QUESTION:
do the barking dogs collars work.my breed of dog is a pug?
my pug dog holly. barks at other dogs when we are out i've tried a water spray to stop her. it only works for a little while, then somebody told me you can buy a collar that transmits a sound which is safe for her. does it work-
ANSWER:
Training your dog not to bark without the aid of a no-bark collar would of course be the best course of action, especially if the barking problem only occurs when you are with her. But, you asked about the collars.There are lots of different types of bark collars that work in different ways with varying degrees of success.
The sound-producing ones are often a high-pitched sound that your dog can hear but you can't. I've never talked to anyone who's used one, but you might try some other sound aversion techniques (for example, drop a small coffee can half-full of pennies or pebbles on the pavement when she barks) to see if your dog will respond to that before spending the money on a collar. Some dogs get so into their barking that they don't even care, which is probably why your spray bottle doesn't always work. BUT if your dog responds to sound aversion in this situation, it might be worth it.
There are also collars which spray citronella mist in your dog's face. It doesn't hurt the dog but it sounds pretty horrible to me.
By far the most common type of no-bark collar is the shock collar. If you decide to get one of these, make sure it has enough levels that you can turn it really low. Your dog should be just barely uncomfortable, like you scuffing your feet on the carpet and touching something metal (or another person.) If your dog yelps or jumps, it's set too high. To set it properly, you should start at the lowest level and work up slowly until your dog shows some sort of reaction. I have a remote training collar that I used to teach my dog emergency stops off-leash. It went from 1 to 14. I couldn't even feel level 1 on my bare hand. My dog worked on level 3. That's what you want the ability to do.
Also, no matter what kind of collar you want to get, you should look at the type of sensor it uses. Most collars have only a vibration sensor, so the dog may get a correction for something like scratching or shaking instead of barking. Some collars have a microphone, and they can get corrected when a large or noisy vehicle drives by (a good way to make your dog terrified of those!) If you're going to get a collar, I would recommend one that has BOTH types of sensors, like this one:
http://www.moorepet.com/PetSafe-Premium-Deluxe-Bark-Control-Collar-p/mps-pdbc-300.htm
That will minimize the chance of a false correction.Also, you should limit the amount of time your dog wears the collar, and remove it if she shows signs of discomfort. Even the non-shocking collars generally have to be put on very tightly in order for the sensors to work, and it can be uncomfortable for your dog after a while.
I hope this helps.
QUESTION:
When ever I let my two dogs outside, they always end up barking constantly. How do I train them to stop?
How do I get my two dogs to stop barking constantly whenever I let them outside in my backyard, not involving and eloctronic collars or anything like that.-
ANSWER:
Go out with them with a squirt bottle full of water. As soon as they bark tell them "quiet!!" and squirt them in the face. Dogs don't like the water in their face. You have to be very consistent especially if you've let them get away with it for any length of time. You also have to be sure to praise them (and give treats if they work for treats) when they are quiet. If you see they're about to bark, just say "uh-uh" - works better than saying no all the time. Be consistent and reward for good behaviour.
QUESTION:
How do i train my dogs to stop barking?
I have two small dogs, Jimmie and Maggie. They bark at every little noise. I have tried to spray water in their face, the shock collars and saying no barking. Nothing works. Any idea's?-
ANSWER:
Teach them to bark, then teach them to be quiet. To start off, when one of them barks, name it. Example, Maggie barks, you say good bark Maggie, and give her a treat and praise. Yes, you treat and praise so they learn what barking is. Once they've learned that, move on to the quiet command. Say Jimmy is barking. Wait until you have a second of quiet, then say quiet Jimmy, praise and treat. This will work much better than negative training such as spray bottles and shock collars. You might also want to make sure they're getting enough mental and physical exercise, since dogs tend to bark, amongst other things if they're bored.
QUESTION:
How do you stop dogs from barking?
4 of my pitbulls loves to bark. They will bark at anything, flies, mosquitoes, exc. Plus they bark at each other when they play. Some of my neighbors have already made comments about how much they bark. Even though they are only outside while I'm at work. And I will not put a bark collar on them, so please don't suggest it. And my other problem is that my roomates dog will attack them if toys are outside with them, trust me I tried it and it was not pretty. What can I do? Any suggestions?-
ANSWER:
Get a simple spray bottle(any kind, just make sure it doesn't have any chemicals previously in it!). Everytime they bark, try squirting them right in the face. Most dogs hate that. Continue doing that, then they will start to bark, then look at you with guilt. Then you can threaten them with the bottle. Thats how I get my dog to stop.
QUESTION:
From the two former questions, how do you stop dogs from barking?
Thank-you for all your answers and on reading your advice I have decided not to buy shock collars for the three dogs as they are too cruel, and small terriers (paps) are a nervous breed of dog to begin with. Where to I buy a remote control barker/training collar from and how much do they cost?-
ANSWER:
I used to think that my dogs were just barking for no reason, but now I don't think that's true. They used to bark every night, all night which drove me insane. I never could see anything. I finally discovered there was a fox in the area and now I feel bad for yelling at them to shut up. They are just doing what they think is duty and comes natural. I just go out and pretend I see what they are trying to show me and praise them for being 'Good Dogs', lead them back with a nice treat and try to move their attention to something else. Like a game of tug-of-war. They are just trying to please. I really think you should give them a little more credit before resorting to something as drastic as shocking them for doing what is only instinct.
QUESTION:
Which collar works better to stop dog barking... shock collar or ultra sonic collar?
I'm just trying to do a little research on which collar I should get. I have 2 dogs one is a bulldog/boxer mix and the other is a lab/pitt mix if that helps...-
ANSWER:
I used to be horrified about the thoughts of using a shock collar on my dog. But decided to try it. After doing research the shock feels like static electricity. Have even shocked my self and found that it's just an annoyance rather than harmful. As soon as i put it on my dog i saw results. Took about a couple of days to get the jest that he wasn't aloud to bark. Now he doesn't hardly have to wear it. I can just give the command "No Bark" and he usually listens. Without even wearing the collar.My Co-worker uses the Citronella spray collar and that even works better than the shock. Has 2 dogs that bark. If they both bark with one dog only wearing the collar both dogs will smell the citronella and both will shut up immediately.
QUESTION:
How can I stop my little yorkie from barking like mad at all the neighbors dogs?
He waits by the back to door acting like he has to use the bathroom and then he shoots out the door barking like crazy at the dogs on the other side of the fence. HE does this with all dogs. Is there anything other than a bark collar that will stop him from doing this? It is embarrassing.-
ANSWER:
LOL, yeah, yorkies can bark, cant they! My yorkie has a thing for birds. He sits at the back door and can bark for hours! But we have found that a squirt bottle works like a charm. Our yorkie hates water though. So with just one squirt, he's a quite little mouse! Then he gives us this cute little look like, "what did I do wrong?"
QUESTION:
My dogs wont stop barking?
I have 3 shih tzus. I keep them outside during the day and i take them in at night. The problem is they bark at everything. They bark at birds, motorcycles and at my neighbors. My neighbors already complained. I dont want to get bark collars but if i cant stop them from barking it would be my only choice. Any advice on what to do would be great.-
ANSWER:
They are bored, it's why they are barking. Same routine everyday.Take them on a nice long walk before work. Walking stimulates the senses and tires them out. Give them some mentally stimulating toys, like frozen Kongs with peanut butter or canned dog food. They also have treat balls you stuff treats into. Anything to make them 'work' will stimulate them and result in a less bored dog.
Consider dog day care as well or hiring a dog walker.
QUESTION:
how to stop my indoor dogs from barking?
I have 3 shitzu dogs that live inside my house. it is nearly impossible to get a good nights sleep because they will randomly start barking for no reason late at night. I usually get woken up at least 3-4 times each night due to that. what are some methods that I can get them to stop barking? I am a bit concerned to use a "shock collar" because I have heard it can damage their skin?-
ANSWER:
We have 2 GS and a Beagle. We recently purchased a Ultra Sonic Bark Controller device that has been wonderful. Along with us still working with the dogs (one GS barks at everything) when the barking happens he quiets down right away and the other two don't make a noise. We also give the reassurance of good boy and don't worry about it when he doesn't (or any of them) continue to bark. This has even worked with the dog hearing sirens.
This is a good product but you still need to work with the dog. Many people think this is the fix and don't need to do anything and they're wrong.
This product isn't attached to the dog. I would suggest with you having smaller dogs to set it on the floor and not a table. It also has a button that you can push to set the sound off. Also let them know, that's enough, go to bed.
QUESTION:
my dogs wont stop barking at every little thing?
so i have 3 dogs..a girl corgi about 2..a boy jack russell .a little over 2...and a boy pit bull, 1/4 lab tho, and hes about 5 months...anyway the corgi initiates the barking about 57% of the time and the puppy never starts it yet and is only just beginning to join in with the others since when one barks they all start.....so anyway they will bark at any little noise because we live in an apartment and its causing complaints and also very aggravating because it will happen at least 20-25 times a day...i just want to know how to make them stop or prevent it all together without bark collars, your help would be greatly appreciated, thank you
ok so to add on things...they really just bark at noises and stuff they see outside when looking out windows...also when anyone walks in the door, including us as in me, my mom, or brother, they do go on walks regularly and dont bark at things outside.-
ANSWER:
Before anything happens you need to seek the posture they use, the attentiveness, etc to recognize the state of mind they are in before they bark. if you notice any projection, make a claw as if you're going to pinch them (don't actually pinch them) and tap them in the shoulder with that while saying "ch!" or "sh!" sound, notice you've gotten their attention, and repeatedly do this until they stop and enter a calm state of mind. reward that state of mind.
Perhaps, they are bored and you need to take them on walks, do the same thing as above if they are barking at everything on your walk.
Have an assistant knock on the door. beat your dogs to it and say "bark!." reward them. repeat this "bark" and reward them when they bark. now say "enough!" and wave your arms in the air, clap, etc whatever to get their attention, once they've stopped, reward them. Repeat "enough," reward, "enough," reward over and over again until they truly understand. This way they will turn to you when someone is at the door. Remember to have confidence and good attitude because if you are frustrated during training, your dog can sense it.
ANSWER:
If she is that determined a barker, then she will probably bark right through it.Obviously, if she was not a hard core barker when you got her, she is a barker now because you have allowed it. Why not just train her to stop barking?
When she starts barking, get up and see what she is barking at. If it is not something you want her to bark at, tell her "hush" or "stop" or whatever word you want her to learn means stop barking.
If she ignores you, tell her "stop", reach down and give her a sharp poke in the shoulder with your finger. That is all it takes with most small dogs.
If she ignores the finger, get a spray bottle and fill it with water. When she barks say "stop", use the finger poke, and then spray her with the water. Do not just spray her, go through the entire process each time, because you want her to eventually listen to only the verbal command. Once she understands that if she ignores you she will be corrected, and corrected harder if she ignores that, she will cooperate.
I have had some hard-core barkers (my chi was surrendered to the shelter because of her barking) and I have never found one that will ignore water.
Save the treats for when you are teaching her to sit.
We have not gotten a complaint "yet" as our apt manager has put it, but we need to get our 2 dogs to stop barking when people come by the apt.The problem is I don't want to teach them not to bark AT ALL, which sorta leaves out the anti-barking collars.
What is a good way to teach them to bark when someone approaches the house, but not at every car/person who walks by the backyard or street? And to bark a few times then stop.
Also how difficult do you think it will be to teach an "old dog new ticks"? Our one dog is almost 9 years old, and our other is still a pup about 7 mo. old.
We tell them no when we are home, but they don't seem to be getting the point. And what to do when we are not home? Sometimes (not always) we are gone to long (10-12 hrs) to lock them inside the whole day (And they still bark, just not as much indoors).
It was not as bad before our new neighbors, who have 4 kids. So our puppy constantly barks at them through the fence. This is why the barking was “brought to our attention".
Dragon: Your idea sounds great! I only have one problem, what do we do when we are not home to tell them to stop barking?-
ANSWER:
Most dogs have no clue as to whether barking is something good or something bad. Sometimes when the dog barks, he is ignored (owner in a jolly mood). Other times, the dog is encouraged (owner sees suspicious stranger outside the house). And yet other times, the dog is yelled at (owner has a headache). Humans are consistently inconsistent. In order to help your dog know your rules, teach him what they are. Here is a good rule to start with: Barking is OK until the dog is told to "Stop Barking." Think of "Stop Barking" as an obedience command rather that simply an unpredictable reprimand. Each time your dog barks, after two or three woofs, praise her for sounding the alarm. Then tell her, "Stop Barking." Simultaneously, waggle an especially tasty food treat in front of her nose.Most dogs instantly stop barking because they can't sniff and lick the treat while barking. During this quiet time praise her continuously - - "Good girl, stop barking, what a good quiet dog you are, good dog . . ." After 3 seconds of no barking, let her have the treat. The next time she barks, require her to stop barking for 5 seconds before she gets the treat. Each time she is told to stop barking and succeeds, she will be rewarded.
If she barks even one little wooflet after you've given the command, scold her immediately. Timing is everything. As training proceeds, the required period of silence is increased gradually; at first "Stop Barking" means: No barking for the next 3 seconds, then 5 seconds, then 10 seconds and so on. Within a single training session, you can teach your dog to stop barking for up to 1 or 2 minutes. This is major progress, because whatever set off her barking in the first place is history, and she is likely to be quiet until the next disturbance.
QUESTION:
Does a muzzle work to stop dog barking (bark collar doesn't work)?
My 8 month Golden Retriever is not phased even slightly by the bark collar. I put it on tight and could hear it beeping when he barked but he didnt stop or act any differently.He is in the house with me alot and I take him on a 2.5 mile walk everyday (about a mile of that is offleash in marshy field where he can just run), I give him bones, kongs to try to keep him busy. Then once I put him in the garage/outdoor run area he will be out there barking at the wind, anyone who walks by, at a piece of paper, or just for fun... -he is not barking out of lonliness but out of boredom, the thing is I cant entertain him 24/7.My Grandpas(who lives with us) doctor says he has less than six months to live. He sleeps alot and his bedroom is right by the dog run. So i've started just throwing my dog in his crate in my room(i trained him not to bark in the crate) when I cant watch him. I've tried everything i'm so frusturated I love him and do not want to give him up but at the same time his barking makes me soooo mad that I feel like I cant even enjoy him. I cant even shower without him annoying the whole neighborhood.
It can get hot in the summers and I dont want to put a muzzle on him if that would prevent him from panting. But i'd like to just do something for 2 hours without having to worry about him barking. Any ideas?
We have a 6 year old Lab who does not bark and a cat and they all get along but sometimes he will bark at them to play with him as well. (they ignore him)
If you read what I wrote I tell you he does get exercise and attention. I cannot spend every second of my day with him it is not possible.
Thanks silly! I was thinking of trying a Cintronella collar!!
And because he is unsupervised in the garage/outdoor run and his crate is by my bed so I would take water and spray it in his face when he barked. He only barks when I am not there.-
ANSWER:
how did you train him not to bark inside the crate, but not outside of the crate? just curious....
have you tried the Citronella Bark Collar? it's a collar to put on dogs who bark a lot. it sprays the mist (dogs hate the smell) whenever the dog barks.ADD: oh, i see! the water method worked for me too. it wasn't for barking, though. it was for my dogs chewing problem.
no problem! there are sooo many different devices available for dogs who bark a lot. if you have PetSmart or Petco, or any dog store, you'll see them in there. i have read many great reviews on the Citronella Collar. our local humane society even lends these out for 2 weeks because it seems to work well. dogs eventually understand that when they bark, bark, bark all the time, they get that nasty mist.
QUESTION:
How do I stop my dogs barking before walks?
I have two dogs, both rescues, a lab and a king charles. They get so excited at "walk time" that they bark like mad, and it continues half way down the street! Is there anyway I can stop them? I appreciate that dogs WILL always bark, but I can't help thinking my neighbours don't appreciate the constant noise until I'm halfway to the field! It starts when I get the collars down from the hook and doesn't stop until they've been walking a few minutes. I walk them four times a day round the big fields near me (I live in a semi-rural small town) and on the way back they're shattered and quiet as lambs!!
I've tried sending them to their beds, spraying them with water, a tap on the nose, saying "NO!" and also ignoring it, but nothing works! I even bought an anti bark collar that supposedly emitted a high pitched noise only they could hear, which made no difference at all and then my lab lost it in the lake anyway!
Any ideas? Or is it just something I have to accept?
I have tried making them wait/leaving the room etc and believe me, they bark LOUDER! As for their history, the lab was never walked but we have had her now for about 2 years, the other was kicked out on the street, had her just over one year.-
ANSWER:
the way i did my pom i took and ignored her walked away..everytime she started getting hyper i would go sit down until she stopped..soon she was sitting quietly..took about 2 hours but she knew if she got hyper i would go sit down..
QUESTION:
Bark Collars for Dogs?
What does everyone suggest to make my dog stop barking? has anyone tried the Sonic sound Bark Collars? I would rather not use one that shocks him. Please help!-
ANSWER:
Bark collars of the Electric kind are the ONLY ones that will make a dog that is determined to bark, stop. No stupid sonic or perfume collar works on a determined dog. The Electric bark collar works on all dogs, all the time. And if it makes you feel better, the dog decides if it gets stimulated or not by the collar. No bark, no stimulation. Cause=effect. Good luck.
Stop Barking Dogs Device
If you are at your wit's end to stop your dog's constant barking and you are sick and tired of being embarrassed when you take your dog out and he is continually barking at other dogs then at some point or other you must have thought "If only there was a device to stop my dog barking". Now trust me, you are not alone in this situation, dog owners everywhere worry about their dog's barking and the effect it has, not only on them as owners, but on the neighbors as well.
I too have suffered from the frustrations of a very vocal dog and so I spent a while researching on line what devices are available on the marketplace and do they work? There are various devices available, depending on how much money you can afford to spend and these are namely:
Spray collars - These collars work on the basis that when your dog barks they emit a spray of citronella into the dog's face. Most reviews say that they had little effect on their dog's barking. Some of the collars were too heavy for the dogs and in a short space of time they learnt to outbark the spray.
Anti shock collars - these work on the basis that when a dog first barks they hear a beep sound and if this is followed by them barking again then they receive a mild electric shock. Persistent barking results in the shock getting more intense. I personally, and an awful lot of dog owners find this method inhumane since different regulations in different countries mean you can never be sure of the intensity of the shock administered.
Ultrasonic dog barking devices - these work on the concept that an internal microphone picks up the sound of your dog barking within a certain radius, and emits a shrill noise that cannot be heard by humans. Mixed reviews state that the device works initially because it puzzles the dog, but then quite quickly the dogs get used to it and simply ignore the sound. The devices are also pretty hefty on batteries!
After reading a great many reviews on devices to stop my dog barking I came to the conclusion that there is no "quick fix" solution and you have to be willing to spend a lot of time and patience on understanding why your dog is barking before you can go ahead and control the barking.
QUESTION:
Is there a sonic (stop barking) device that will work on my neighbor's dogs?
If money was no object what type of sonic (or other) device could I buy that will work to stop my neighbor's dog from barking all day? The dogs are 2 houses away so I need a device with a long range. Thanks.-
ANSWER:
They make a deviceThe Bark Stop called that can be used in kennels and dog shelters. It is placed outside near the noise and puts out a sound that is irritating to the dogs when they bark. This will only work for nuisance barking not panic barking and protection barking. It costs about which to me is a fair price if it is guaranteed to work. It may depend on how close the dogs are to your home otherwise you may ahve to put it on a fence or tree to get the full effect from it.
Give it a try.
QUESTION:
Will a anitbark device stop my neighbors dogs from barking?
I have been looking at several antibark devices to stop the 5-6 dogs my neighbors have in their backyard from ruining my day by waking me up many times while I sleep.There are several on the market, including a few on EBay that have mixed feedbacks. Most all are automatic ultrasonic units. One did claim to be better because it was manually activated so other noises won't set it off.
I have worked with the police/court system on this before and got it to stop. Problem now is that after 1 1/2 of the dogs being stored inside their garage, they have built a fence. Now the dogs are in the backyard again barking.
However it is not as constant as when they were kept out there on chains before. It will be considerably harder to go to court with it this time since they don't bark over 10 minutes straight like before.They bark now for a few minutes and just about the time you go to sleep again they fire back up.
And no, killing them is not an option.
I have used ear plugs in the past. Generally I roll over and they fall out. I even tried the expensive wax kind that forms to your ear.I also have run a fan on high. Problem is the barking is so loud it won't begin to cover it up. Not even close. A TV set on really loud does good to be over top of it.
These aren't bark collars, they are boxes that emit sound when a dog barks.If they bark for longer periods I can file a civil suit. I was close a couple years ago when they agreed to put them in their garage.
My lawyer found a VERY similar case where the person in my shoes won and was the only complainer, right here in my state.
Does anybody here have an recommendations on a specific device? There are about 5 on the market that I see.-
ANSWER:
The neighbors will probably not be willing to put the anti-bark collars on their dogs. Many,not all,dog owners believe they are evil and bad as they shock the dog when it barks. You can try consulting a mediator. Personally,I would recommend ear plugs, background white noise(like a fan) or something to control YOUR environment. If you are worried about hearing a morning alarm clock there is an option of a vibrating watch to wake you. I honestly wish you the best of luck! I'm proud of you for not considering any "permanent" solutions to the barking problem. Good Luck!
QUESTION:
High frequency device to stop late night dog barking?
There are hiigh frequecy devices to stop dog barking up to 50 feet away. Is there one to stop late nignt dog barking a neighborhood block away. This would be the most humane thing to do. Calling the police is a waist of time as the dogs stop when police arrive. This happens often. Like they know when police come.-
ANSWER:
Instead of calling the cops, go down to the station and file a report.
Report them to animal control too.
Have you tried talking to them? Get a few neighbors together and go over. Bring baked goods to break the ice.
The ultra sonic devises might work. It might make them worse.
QUESTION:
Need device to stop barking dogs next door. Would like something in my yard that would react to the bark.?-
ANSWER:
My husband and I have 2 Siberian Huskies. We do not allow our dogs to annoy our neighbors. My husband works outside the home, and we also own our own business, which I run out of our home. I am home alot so the dogs are mostly inside the house (they are extremely spoiled) with me. When they are outside, the minute they make a sound, I let them back in the house. I wish I could say the same for our neighbors. One of our neighbors has two small dogs that yap constantly. We live in a fourplex, so there is our house and 3 other houses all in a row. What amazes me is that if I can hear their dogs yapping from 3 houses down, how come they (and they are home most of the time in the evenings when the dogs yap the most) can't seem to hear them yapping in their own backyard? Never could figure that one out. Anyway, my husband just goes down and knocks on their door and asks them to take their dogs inside their house. This usually solves the problem for us. That and the fact that we all have the same landlord, and I'm sure they are smart enough to realize that if they don't quiet their dogs, our next step would be to complain to the landlord, and failing that, we would complain to the police until they got tired of hearing from us!
Hollering does not help. Are they any good or am I wasting my money? Please no nasty remarks.-
QUESTION:
how can i stop my dogs barking without buying an expensive device?-
ANSWER:
two ways I have learned to stop my dogs from barking excessively.
Figure out why they bark..if it is noise from sirens..other dogs barking..then expose them to it regularly so they won't care..Take them away from the neighbors.. and play the noise ..via a laptop or recording..you can get the sound effects from youtube or limewire at your own risk of course..or even on a tv show.
praise them when they sit quietly with treats... ignore them when they make the noise..show them the treat and don't offer them any...for infractions..The other way.. teach your dog to bark on command..
use the noise to get them to bark.. praise them.. then use a hand gesture.. during the noise..praise them for responding with noise and then gesture..once they have mastered that..
then remove the noise and only use the gesture..praise only when they bark for the gesture..
soon they will bark just for the gesture and will look for it.. give them great praise .. and practice the gesture with them..for fun..
when the noise occurs . they usually will not bark.. just to please you...
However if you have terriers good luck..
QUESTION:
How do I get my neighbors dogs to stop barking? Do anti barking devices you can mount on your home work?
I would rather not call animal control. Has anyone tried those bark control devices??-
ANSWER:
Generally, anti barking devices have been known to work. They didn't work for me though! When my golden retriever was young, he barked constantly. The device I bought was a little bird house that let out a high pitched sound, inaudible to humans. It made my puppy bark even more.....but it's worth a shot. Your neighbors dogs may not be as determined as my little guy was.
What device can I buy that makes dogs stop barking?
I want something I can plug into a wall or attach to a fence to make the neighbors dogs stop barking at me whenever I go outside. Is there anything I can do to make them back off?
Edit: Just FYI, there is no way I am willing to talk to my neighbors because they are just a bunch of dropouts blasting music all the time and not training their 6 or more dogs. How to get a dog to stop barking without using any kind of device?
My dog won't shut up,, he barks for nothing how do i get him to stop?-
ANSWER:
If you have attempted to train your dog verbally, then your remaining options are surgery to lower the tone of your dog's bark {debarking} or purchasing a no bark collar & training the dog what behavior is expected of it.Far better to train the dog & not have it aggravate you {& possibly your neighbors} with persistent barking which is nuisance behavior & if that fails consider surgery, than carry on as you are.
QUESTION:
Bark Buster a sonic training device to curb barking dogs?
The Bark Buster is a training device that emits a harmless yet high-pitched sonic pulse each time your dog barks (or the neighbor's dog barks). It's inaudible to humans, but quite noticeable to dogs! Your dog will learn to control barking without shock collars or other painful methods. i was wondering if this causes any harm to a dog? also if anyone owns one does it work?here's how it works.not that i own it mind you. you do not teach the dog rather the pulse activates once the dog barks and shuts off when they stop.
secondly its a portable device so when you go for a walk u take it with you.
thirdly it turns off when they stop barking.-
ANSWER:
they don't work well, the sell the ones that are voice activated too, it only works if you have one of those outside and you want to keep pests away. Even then that technology isn't very good because some humans are sensitive to it.
QUESTION:
do dog whistles actually make a dog stop barking?
I have 5 weenie dogs and when they all get to barking, it will actually make you think your eardrums are rattling. I was wondering if any of you have had any success with any anti-barking devices and what kind you used, and if you have a special website I could go to.Thanks!
What about those devices that emit a sound only they can hear? Been looking at something called a dazer. Then they have these collars that will spray citronella when they bark.-
ANSWER:
A dog whistle will not stop a dog from barking, but if you train the dog to come to you when you blow the whistle, then in theory if it is barking, you should be able to call it to you and reward it when it stops the obsessive barking.That said, the pitch of a dog whistle is sometimes enough to break the focus of a barking dog. They're not used to hearing things at that pitch, so when they do, they look for the source but only for a moment. If you only blow the whistle to stop the barking and don't actually use it in conjunction with a command such as sit, or come, then they will only pause in the barking for a brief moment, and eventually it will have no effect whatsoever.
Train the dogs to come when you blow the whistle. Associate the whistle with great treats, but teach them that they need to be next to you to get the treats. (You have dachshunds, so food should be enough to motivate them.) You need to make sure that they have a totally reliable recall with the whistle before you introduce the concept when they are distracted by barking. Once you call them when they're barking, you have to correct them immediately if they start barking again. Make them come to you and sit for their treats, make them give YOU their attention, not whatever they're barking at. If they woof, tell them, "No," and don't treat them till they are calm and focussed on you again.
It can work, but it's not an immediate fix.
ADD:
The citronella bark collars are a temporary solution, until the dog decides to bark anyway. Once they overcome the shock of the spray, all the collar does is desensitize them to other possible corrections. Bark collars don't train a dog. They just put a bandaid over the issue. Once you start using those things, you can never take them off.
QUESTION:
Is there a Sonic Device that I can use to emit the Sounds that can stop Dog Barking 24/7?...?
...Wanting to get rid of the Dog.
There's a Crazy Dog next door barking at 24/7. Trying to reason with the Owner, who then threatened us with his Dog. We are now thinking if there's some Sonic Device that can emit the Anti-Barking Sounds 24/7, rather than when the Dog barks, so that the Owner can remove his Dog next door from our place?-
ANSWER:
Second, you can go thru the city code department and thru the local humane society to have the dog's nuisance factor documented. I'm always a fan of doing things legally, despite the extra time involved, because that way things don't circle back around and bite me in the rear. Have a good chat with your city about its laws regarding nuisance dogs and how they are enforced.
Third, yes. Dogs hear in a range well above human hearing (dog whistles use this fact) and some areas will sell electronic devices as pest control (because insects also hear at frequencies above human ability.) These are usually designed to force critters to leave an area where they are plugged in, turned on, and transmitting. Their usefulness for something as far away as next door is unknown. Theoretically, you could experiment with this. If the owner finds out, of course, there will be violence and lawsuits, and that latter is why point #2 is up there.
QUESTION:
Does any one else disagree with that device that's suppose to stop your dog from barking?
I ask a question earlier about dogs eating chocolate and received some nasty responses in regards to my animal etiquette. I LOVE ANIMALS!
Just an amateur with dogs. Thanks.-
ANSWER:
Hi vindic8,Well, I didn't see your question on dogs and chocolate. I will tell you that it may kill your dog.
As far as those devices are concerned, it's been documented that they are hurting those animals.
There was a case of someone going to court and demanding the owner of the barking dog get that device, he got an animal activist attorney and won. Well I guess there are still people trying to protect innocent animals out there. I would never do that to a dog!Best2u,
QUESTION:
do the devices to make dogs stop barking harm my turtle or any other pet like a rabbit???-
ANSWER:
Yes they will. A shock like that is very likely to kill your rabbit. Dogs have very tough skin on their necks so the pain is not as bad as it would be on other animals. However I believe it must hurt a great deal to stop the behavior.Rabbits can have a heart attack if scared to much. Something made for a dog is not for any other animal.
QUESTION:
The sonic device which sits on the table and stops dogs from barking - would it work on a cat's loud meow?
The cat meows VERY loudly, fairly often. Would the sonic device work, and if so, would it be safe and humane? or would it harm the cat, or hurt his ears? Don't want to distress him.-
ANSWER:
No it wouldn't work. Anyway that training is very bad.. you treat the barking with unplesant sensations. That dosen't help the dog.. you should reward the dog for not barking.Lovee,
neighbors dog barks constantly.bought a "stop barking"device(high pitch freq.)no affect-
Most dogs bark because they are bored and lonely. Talk to the neighbors tell them the dog is bothering you and other neighbors and they need to do something about it. if that doesn't produce any results, then call the police and animal control. It's not the dogs fault it's barking, it's the owners fault.
QUESTION:
How can you make a dog stop barking?
My neighbors dog barks so much that you have no idea. It doesn't let our family watch tv, eat, go out in the yard because of his barking. He barks at anything that moves, I think that even at ghosts. QUESTION:
How to you make a dog stop barking?
I live in an apartment building, and in the building across from mine, there is always a yappy dog barking the backyard. Today it was barking for more than 3 hours straight early in the morning. I do not know anyone in the other building, but I can hear the dog clearly through my window. Are there devices that emit a high-frequency sound and makes dogs be quiet? My neighbor across the floor also has a dog who barks whenever the neighbor leaves. Hopefully this solution can deal with both.-
ANSWER:
Call the police. The dog is certainly violating any noise ordinances in your area.You could also make a complaint to that building's management company. I doubt you'd be the first-the other residents must be reporting this little yappy pest as well.
QUESTION:
Is using an ultrasonic sound to stop dog barking cruel? Please help!?
I have a 2 year old toy american eskimo who loves to bark. My boyfriends dad bought him this device that makes an ultrasonic sound to try to get him to stop barking. I would rather train him with a water bottle, and rewards, but my boyfriend feels the sound device is necessary. Our eskimo is already a nervous wreck, if you drop a spoon on the floor he'll hide under the couch for like an hour. I feel this sound will just make him more nervous, and ruin his character. Please help!-
ANSWER:
In my experience, the ultrasonic collars did not work at all. My dogs totally ignored them. Therefore, I don't think your dog will be bothered by this device.Water bottles (and squirt guns) only work when you are right there with the water bottle. When you are at work, at school or even in the bathroom, the water bottle method is useless. The dog will RAPIDLY learn that when you aren't there to squirt him, it's safe to bark.
Electric shock collars are horrible. They make some dogs screech and scream and bark MORE. They are cruel.
Citronella spray collars work great. Since dogs don't flee the room when a person eats an orange or tangerine (but may instead pause to sniff the fruit), you can tell that citronella, which smells faintly of citrus , doesn't have a painful or cruel effect on the dog's nasal passages. It is just a smell that dogs dislike.
I bought my citronella spray collars at petedge.com. I advise you to buy at least one (more are better) extra can of refill spray. You will need it. Anti-bark collars do not teach a dog anything except not to bark while the collar is on and functioning.
QUESTION:
Anything you can do about neighborhood dogs barking?
I got dogs that bark seemingly non-stop during the day and at night. They're good and friendly dogs, I love them and I don't want my neighbor's to get rid of them. And truthfully, there is really not much my neighbor's can do about it...so talking to them is out. Any humane way of making them stop...like a whistle, or anti-bark device? Anybody got experience on what "does" work? thx-
ANSWER:
It's lack of training by the owners.Calling the police is your only option but,then it's the dog that will end up paying for it.I don't believe in the shock collar thats cruel,how'd you like to wear one?
If you love them like you say,,learn to ignore,or teach them to hush since their owners won't.Trust me I've yelled out the window in the middle of the night at my neighbors dogs!
QUESTION:
How can I stop my neihbor's dogs from barking at me when I go out onto the deck of my house?
Is there an effective device that I can use? Of course, I've already spoken to the dog's owner.
That didn't help.-
If you have already spoken with the owner, and they won't do anything about it, it's time to file a complaint with animal control or the police. When your neighbor starts getting fines for noise violations and not properly controlling their dogs, they'll do something about it.
QUESTION:
What do you recommend to get a dog to stop barking?
I have two dogs, a one year old female and a two year old male. The female barks every time she goes outside.. at squirrels, neighbors, leaves blowing in the wind. The male mostly only barks inside when he sees other cars or cats on our street. We've tried behavioral/reinforcement training but we've found it's nearly impossible to be with the dogs every time they bark, so they don't get the consistent punishment or reward. We want to get one of the devices to stop the barking, but I'm not sure if it would be better to get an outdoor device to mount to a tree or to get a collar. Our female gets scared and shaky very easily, and I'm scared a shock collar may make her terrified. On the other hand, we really need something both inside and outside. Any particular device or brand you all recommend?-
ANSWER:
The citronella collar worked for my sensitive dog. He hates the stuff spraying in his face. Now, all I do is put the collar on him and he is quiet.
A neighbor taught her VERY yappy Sheltie to be quiet by using a spray bottle with just water in it. The dog hated being sprayed in the face with the water bottle and after a couple of weeks learned to not bark.
The can with rocks or pennies will work with some dogs too.
However, a collar that works on it's own like the citronella collar or a shock collar is the most reliable way to stop barking when you can't be there 24/7. The citronella collar does not work on all dogs. Some will just continue to bark with it on and soon empty the canister of citronella. I'd suggest you get a good quality shock collar. These have very low settings and increase the shock if the dog continues to bark.
Stop Barking Dogs
Are you tired of your four legged companion being aggressive towards other dogs? Has he made you look for ways how to stop dog aggression towards other dogs? Although aggression is a difficult issue to deal with, there are different ways in which the issue can be alleviated. Here are some tips for you to stop dog aggression towards other dogs.
1 - The first step is to recognize your dog's bodily signs of confrontation. He might stare at the other dog with the hair on the back on his neck standing. He may also flatten backwards and with a tilted head keep on staring at the other dog. This is the time to intervene, if you fail to intervene at this moment your dog may start barking or attack the other dog.
2 - While you learn how to stop dog aggression towards other dogs, safety should be your first priority if you have a generally aggressive dog. Muzzle your dog to avoid injury to another dog.
3 - Socialize your dog as much as possible; however, you should keep him on a short leash. The more your dog encounters other dogs the less he will feel intimidated on spotting one.
4 - While you are on the sidewalk and another person approaches with his dog, stand in front of your dog blocking his view to the other dog and keep on speaking to him so that his attention is towards you and not the other dog. Praise your dog and perhaps give him a treat if he stays calm.
5 - You should control your own emotions while the dog is behaving aggressive. Do not yell still issue commands firmly. With your anxiety you can worsen his tension and make him to act more aggressively.
As you can see here learning how to stop dog aggression towards other dogs can be a difficult and tedious process. When working with an aggressive dog, a good dog training course can be very useful. You will want to look for the one that includes a free consultation with an experienced dog trainer.
QUESTION:
How do you stop dogs barking?
My dog is 2 and a half and won't stop barking! We've tried for A G E S and he's unstoppable!
Many people recommend bark collars. Done that with expensive and cheap collars, it doesn't work. Others recommend lightly taping him on the nose when he's inside but he tries to bite me. When he's outside, he doesn't do recall, he has "selective hearing." He also barks an awful lot at the cats and chases them.Anyone got any ideas on stopping his barking that doesn't include expensive bark collars?
Thanks in advance
-
ANSWER:
First off, DO NOT use a shock collar! They are inhumane and painful for the dog. Seriously, anybody heard the words "animal cruelty"? There's a simple and humane way to make his barking habit better. When he barks, make a loud "Ep!" noise. If you are consistent and make that noise every time he barks, he'll eventually get the memo and stop. As for the situation with the cats, you'll have to A.) chase them out of the yard yourself before the dog gets close to them, B.) Hold the dog back and apply the "sit" command until the cat leaves, C.) Call animal control if the cats are strays to have them removed from the area and sent to good homes, or D.) Fence in your yard if it isn't already.Do your dog a favor and leave the shock collars out of it; doing it this way will be more of a hassle on you, but it is well worth it in the future when you find the end result to be a well-behaved dog.
QUESTION:
are dog whistles effective to stop dogs barking?
I read somewhere that if i Blow on a dog whistle a certain way it might bug a dog so much it stops barking, since it will associate the sound with the annoying sound. is it true?-
ANSWER:
They act to distract the dog from it's barking but it is a temporary measure. If the whistle is noisy, your neighbors can file a complaint for the same noise ordinance violation you should be doing, so be sure to use a dog whistle whose tone is indiscernable to the human ear.Can you direct the neighbors to a trainer or offer them alternatives towards training their dog not to bark? You mentioned in your previous post that you didn't know if they just didn't care or know how to stop the problem. Offering them a solution is your first step in resolving the issue. If that fails, then your next step is to file a complaint for violating the noise ordinances in your area. Document the problem both in a log and with a camcorder for evidence.
QUESTION:
How do you get your dogs to stop barking outside?
I have four dogs and a fenced back yard. My dogs love to go out in the back yard but I can't leave them long because they won't stop barking at other dogs, neighbors, people. We've even had our neighbors come and complain once due to our dogs barking at them so loudly and so much. I don't blame them, it even annoys us! What can I do besides putting up a privacy fence to keep them from barking??-
ANSWER:
Well, I put up a privacy fence and mine still bark. I don't leave them out too long. If they bark nonstop, after a few minutes, I bring them in. The quieter they are the longer they get to play outside. I also keep them in at night. I don't worry too much about mine barking, as several of my neighbors' dogs bark more than mine, so no one complains to me.
Yours may just need something to do; they sound bored.
QUESTION:
How do I make my dog stop barking from other dogs?
I have a beagle and he won't stop barking when other dogs pass by... Any suggestions to make him stop?-
ANSWER:
LOL That's a typical Beagle trait. Surely you did research before taking one into your home. If so, you would already know this. About the only thing you can attempt is a diversion tactic, such as an empty water bottle filled with dried beans or coins. Whenever he goes to bark, shake it. Not in his face or by his ears, but just to where it diverts his attention to what you have and not what he wants to bark at.
QUESTION:
How do I get my dogs to stop barking?
I have two dogs, a rat terrier and a jack russell. They bark all the time. The neighbor came over today and is very upset. He said we have to do something about our dogs barking. His wife is pregnant and it is bothering her. Any ideas on how to get them to stop barking?-
ANSWER:
I know there are multiple "bark eliminator" gadgets out there. My friend has tried the citronella bark collar and also some little box that emits a very high pitch when a dog barks that bothers their ears so much they just stop barking. Both of these have worked!
Also:
-Try leaving the tv or radio on when your'e not home so they cant hear little noises coming from outside.
-Crate train them. When dogs are properly crate trained they are perfectly content to be in their "den" and usually so calm they wont bark anymore.
-This may seem obvious but ive seen people just never verbally correct their dogs. When your dog barks tap its nose (gently) and say "no bark" in a low defined tone. You need to let them know what behaviors are unacceptable or they will just keep doing them.
GOOD LUCK!
QUESTION:
How to stop barking dogs?
I need to learn how to stop barking dogs and get some sleep!-
ANSWER:
I suffered from many sleepless nights wondering how to stop barking dogs ! So I do feel your pain.My Yorkie puppy is a great watch dog, but he barks like crazy during the middle of the night at any car passing by or purr of an outside cat. It was really cutting into my sleeping time.
Friends were recommending ways to teach him (I love my friends, but they're no Dog Whisperers!) I took out some outdated dog training videos from the library with no luck.
Finally my friend with 2 retrievers turned me onto a simple training method:
http://budurl.com/SimpleDogTrainingIt seems so simple after you see it, but until then, you may be like me, running around like an idiot trying to get your dog to stop barking or simply listen to you. This method also worked for teaching my dog how to stop jumping on strangers and to stop chewing on the feet of our furniture as well.
QUESTION:
how can I stop my dogs barking?
I have 2 terrier dogs that will not stop barking outside. we live behind some units and an old grumpy man there provokes them repeatedly. have tried to appeoach him but to no avail. Meanwhile dogs wont stop yapping if he goes outside.-
ANSWER:
terriers do love to talk. a collar that puffs citronella and is yap activated is going to work but these do cost money.a cheap alternative if you have the time is to use a rattle bottle. make one by putting a few coins or pebbles into an empty soft drink bottle. take one dog outside and wait for him to bark. as soon as he does yell no. and make a loud noise near his head (do not hit dog with bottle) with the rattle. This will give him a shock he will stop barking and you praise him just as quick. if you get your timing right you should have him stopped after about 5 or 6 rattles then repeat process with the next dog. you may not cure it altogether but your dogs should shut up when they see you reach for that rattle bottle.
my pack of papillons just need to see me reach for it and they trot on the house quietly
QUESTION:
How do you get dogs to stop barking when someone comes to the door?
I have two dogs and I love them a lot, but they bark a lot. I live with my dad, and he totally hates when the dogs bark. They pretty much only bark when someone comes to the door. I want to make them stop so he doesn't go absolutely insane. If you have any tips, they would be greatly appreciated.Thank You!
-
ANSWER:
The dogs are doing their job by alerting you when someone comes to the door. You haven't taught them the 'quiet' command. When they bark tell them to SSHHHH (or quiet). Stand facing them and say nothing but SSHHH (or quiet) then stay pefectly still and silent. When they stop barking praise them and give them a treat. They will stop barking because they'll want to figure out why you are standing looking at them.
A baby gate can be used to keep them away from the front door but it won't stop them from barking, that's your job.It would help if you have a friend who will ring the doorbell or knock on the door so you can practise teaching the dogs to stop barking when you tell them to be quiet. Good idea would be to do this when your father is not home.
I'm a bit confused. First you said they bark a lot and then you say they only bark when someone comes to the door.
Pay no attention to anyone who suggests you hit the dogs with a newspaper or anything else. Hitting dogs makes them hand shy and you want your dogs to trust you won't hurt them. Yelling won't help either, they'll just think you're joining in the bark fest.
QUESTION:
How do I get my dog to stop barking at other dogs?
I adopted my dog in august and I've taught him all the basic commands and he is really obedient but whenever we go on walks and he sees another dog he starts growling and barking at him. Strangely enough he doesn't growl or bark at dogs that are already barking at him and we took him to the groomer and he did great! When we came to pick him up he was in the doggy daycare center and playing with the other dogs! How can I get him to start liking other dogs and stop his aggression towards them?-
ANSWER:
Any time he starts to be aggressive - make him stop it. Make him sit beside you and try to stop him before he actually can attack. You can tell by the way they look at dogs/people if they are going to attack. Just stop him by saying "NO" and making him look at you. After you do this for awhile, it will appear to seem you are the dominate one to the dog. And that is what you want to be.
Hope this helps!
QUESTION:
How do I stop my dogs barking at passersby?
I have 2 Bernese Mountain Dogs aged 4 and 1. They are usually well behaved, really good natured and generally lovable but any time anyone walks past our house or garden they loose the plot; running around and barking. They're not threatening but because of their size and the noise they produce people are quite scared of them. How do I stop the barking?-
ANSWER:
Pratice recalls (come) with them. Practice, practice, practice. Practice inside, practice in the yard with them on leash, practice one at a time and both together, practice with distractions. Enforce it - don't call them if you then have to spend five minutes chasing them around or you don't feel like getting off the couch to make them come. When they come to you, praise like crazy and give them a few treats (cheese, hotdog, chicken, carrots - dry dog biscuits won't be enough).Then, call them to you when they are barking at people. If you have done your work they will leave the fence and come racing to you because they know really good stuff is in store.
QUESTION:
how can i get my dogs to stop barking at my neighbors?
my dogs bark at our neighbors when the neighbors come and work in their yards. The dogs don't bark when we are home, only when we are at work. this is making our neighbors frustrated. I have tried rearranging our yard, locking them in the house all day but then they just pee all over. how can i stop the barking-
ANSWER:
Things that hurt the dog are NOT good, don't go and get those collars and things its NOT how you teach them. When your dogs barks at the neighbours and other people, clap your hands once and at the same time say, 'Ah' (loud and in an angry voice) If your dogs are still barking don't do it again, just grab their collars, say 'Right' or 'Thats it' and then put them in the toilet or somewhere where they can have time out (NOT in the kennel) for 2 mins. If they keep barking do the same thing again. Finally after some training, when they bark and you say 'Ah' they will stop and you can reward them
QUESTION:
How can I get my dogs to stop barking?
Every time the doorbell rings or if they see something out the window, my dogs start barking. How can i get them to stop?-
ANSWER:
There are a few different ways to get your dogs to stop barking, however when there are multiple dogs it does increase the degree of difficulty.The first thing you could do is change the ring tone of your door bell. My dogs associate the tune that plays with someone being at the door and they race to the door in anticipation of seeing who has come to visit them today.
Another thing would be to have a friend come over at a particular time. When you know that your friend is due to arrive put your dogs on the lead. When your friend rings the door bell and your dogs bark give the lead a bit of a tug to get the attention of your dogs. When they are calm and stop barking, keeping them on lead, open the door. Repeat this several times and your dogs will learn that unless they're quiet the door doesn't get opened and they can't have visitors.
You could try things like Citronella collars and anti-barking collars, but I'm not a fan of these. I much prefer the good old persistent training approach.
Good luck and I hope this helps!
QUESTION:
How do you stop dogs barking and attacking things with loud noises?
I have 1 2 year old rouch collie and she always goes spazz at loud noises eg. lawn mowers, cars etc. and attacks them, nearly injuring herself. What can I do to try to stop these? I have tried telling her off, squirting her with water, ignoring it, distracting her but nothing works. Im worried she is going to injure herself badly oneday.-
ANSWER:
I think you might have to resort to using a runner, leash, or electric collar when she's outside. It might seem cruel, but it will be better for her than getting hit by a car or injured by a lawn mower. If your dog is already 2 years old, it's going to be difficult to train her not to do these things, so damage control will probably be your best answer. Try to keep her and others as safe as possible by controllig where she can go!
QUESTION:
Do the dog collars that stop dogs from barking with sound realy work?
I want to buy a dog collar that could stop my dog from barking. There are these dog collars on eBay that are supposed to stop dogs from barking with some sound that only dogs could hear. If you have any experience with these collars and know if they work or not them please reply.-
ANSWER:
Yes, they do..The one who mentioned sores on the skin was an electric collar, not a sonic (high pitched buzz) one. . I used one for a very traumatized rescued dog, that just couldn't stop barking..She quit within a couple of days, and I took the collar off after less than two weeks..I have loaned it to many friends, as well.
It didn't harm the dog in any way. She is curled here at my feet 10 years later..and only barks if a stranger is here..
I got mine at Walmart..They currently run .
QUESTION:
how do i get my dog to stop barking at dogs that try to smell her?
shes extremely dominant and really strong
whenever we pass by other dogs on walks, she has to go over and smell them, but she runs at them and it gets the other dog all hyper and so once she finally gets near them she does her whole sniffing everything greeting, but when the other dog tries to sniff her, or whatever they do when they stick their faces around the other dogs face/neck, she growls and does a really mean barkshes a very nice dog but it really scares the other dog and their owner, but i dont know how to make her stop!
i try to jerk her away and hold her face and tell her no, but it doesnt stop her from doing it the next timeand whats worse is i have to use one of those gentle leaders becuase she pulls so hard, so the other person thinks its a muzzle and when she runs over to theyr dog or barks at them, the other person freaks out and thinks shes going to bite them and runs, which then obviously makes my dog run after them.
any advice on how to fix these habits?
-
ANSWER:
It's a good idea to use the Gentle Leader but if she still pulls, you may want to use a prong collar until this problem is resolved. They may look cruel, but they really don't hurt the dog, the prongs aren't sharp.At first, don't even let her look at the other dogs, make her walk by and ignore them. If she even looks that way, give a sharp jerk up and tell her 'no' and keep walking. She has to learn that she can only approach other dogs if you say its ok. Once you can get her to walk by other dogs without looking or pulling, find someone you know who has dogs that will work with you. What you'll do is make your dog sit next to you and let the other dog approach you. If your dog stands up or tries to pull, give a sharp jerk and make her sit. The other dog cannot approach unless your dog is sitting. Hopefully she will learn to not be so dominant and that she cannot even look at another dog unless you say its ok.
QUESTION:
how can i make my dog stop barking at other dogs?
last night my dad brought a some dog that he found, some type of small dog very fury, and i already have a some dog that is around 10 years old as soon as my dog came out he tried to bite the other one. gave the dog to its original owner and i was wondering how i can stop him from barking at other dogs or biting cause i do want another.-
ANSWER:
Your dog is being aggressive because it is trying to assert itself as the leader. You must find a way to demonstrate that YOU are its leader. Do not react to its aggressive behaviour. Reward it for good behaviour and show it how you want it to act. Sometimes it sounds a bit counter intuitive but it works!
Hope this helps..
QUESTION:
How can I stop my dog from barking at other dogs?
I have a year and a half old pedigree english cocker spaniel. When it was younger about four labradors chased him and ever since he has barked at most dogs he sees. QUESTION:
How to get my dogs to stop barking?
I have two dogs that always bark when a car pulls into my driveway and when people knock on my door. One of these dogs also barks as loudly as possible when I let her out at night when she has to go to the bathroom.How do I stop this?
-
ANSWER:
Personally I think that it is appropriate for a dog to bark when someone pulls up to your house, and knocks on your door. Your dog is warning you that someone new is at the house. What if your dog didn't bark and someone was trying to break into your house? Its their own way of warning you. However barking at night needs to be fixed. Try a squirt bottle, when they bark make a loud noise (clap your hands) and then squirt them. both the noise and getting squirted with water are adversive. When you squirt and clap you want to say something like "no bark" or "Quiet". Just like you do with sit, stay, or "good potty". You give a word to the action in which you want them to do.
QUESTION:
How do Iget my dog to stop barking at dogs on TV?
I have an eight month old puppy. Every time she hears a dog bark on t.v. she goes nuts. She does n' t realize it comes from the t.v. We tried to watch a movie with dogs in it once and she was freaking out.
We even watched the N.Y. dog show so that she could see them barking and they'd stay on screen longer . She watched that very interested for an hour.
But then she just went back to barking whenever she hears even the slightest bark and she keeps looking at the windows.
I don't think you're getting it. She gets upset when she hears them and keeps walking around looking for them. Maybe she was born around big dogs that scared her or something.. It's not cute or funny or a neat trick.-
QUESTION:
How to stop excessive barking at certain dogs?
I've had my 11mth old crossbreed whippet/terrier bitch for 3 mths (from the local dogs home) and she is a joy, except for one thing! When she see's certain dogs - Rottweilers and Alsations - across the road when we're walking to the park and she can't go to them to say hello, she will not stop barking - it is the only time that commands don't seem to work - she seems to be so over excited that she goes deaf to any command.. the rest of the time she is obedient, well behaved, playful and she has a lovely nature. If she meets the same dogs and can sniff or 'say hello' she's happy and plays happily with them when she gets the chance!She hardly barks at home and rarely responds when she hears dogs barking outside..
Any tips on controlling this barking??
QUESTION:
How can I get my dog to stop barking at other dogs on walks?
How can I get my dog to walk with my pace (not pull the leash) and stop barking and going crazy when he sees other dogs-
ANSWER:
I'd recommend something like the simpleLEASH.When your pup pulls too hard, he'll receive a brief, safe, corrective stimulus.
Dogs quickly learn that they're not to tug and pull, and if he's barking when pulling, chances are he'll stop this as well.
I recently watched a simpleLEASH tutorial video, and I have to say, it looks to be effective.
Best of luck!
QUESTION:
How do I get my dogs to stop barking at everyone?
I have three very friendly dogs and a huge back yard for them to run around in. However, every time people walk by in my neighborhood and they're outside they bark and bark at them til they can practically no longer see them!! It worries me because different people walk by all of the time. They also don't come off very nice to people even though they are seriously friendly dogs. (Just territorial). How do I get them to stop all of this barking?-
ANSWER:
Most often, barking results from boredom, fear, or frustration.
If you don't hear him do it, but you hear about it from neighbors, it's likely your dog barks out of boredom when you're not around. In short, he enjoys barking--it's a way to occupy himself when he's left alone.
Fear barking, on the other hand, is a stress response. It's caused by something unknown to the dog, such as a sudden noise or another dog's bark. Fear barking can also result from sights and sounds a dog finds disconcerting, like skateboards or sirens. In these cases, dogs bark to send a clear message to whatever's scaring them: Stay away!
A third type is frustration barking. This occurs when the dog is denied access to something he desperately wants, such as a favorite toy, a piece of steak, or the terrier on the other side of the fence.Here's how to treat this problem http://dogtime.com/barking.html
QUESTION:
how to stop my indoor dogs from barking?
I have 3 shitzu dogs that live inside my house. it is nearly impossible to get a good nights sleep because they will randomly start barking for no reason late at night. I usually get woken up at least 3-4 times each night due to that. what are some methods that I can get them to stop barking? I am a bit concerned to use a "shock collar" because I have heard it can damage their skin?-
ANSWER:
We have 2 GS and a Beagle. We recently purchased a Ultra Sonic Bark Controller device that has been wonderful. Along with us still working with the dogs (one GS barks at everything) when the barking happens he quiets down right away and the other two don't make a noise. We also give the reassurance of good boy and don't worry about it when he doesn't (or any of them) continue to bark. This has even worked with the dog hearing sirens.
This is a good product but you still need to work with the dog. Many people think this is the fix and don't need to do anything and they're wrong.
This product isn't attached to the dog. I would suggest with you having smaller dogs to set it on the floor and not a table. It also has a button that you can push to set the sound off. Also let them know, that's enough, go to bed.
QUESTION:
What is the best way to permanently stop dogs from barking?
I have two small dogs that are very "barky" and I was wondering if there is a humane way of stopping them from barking. Money is not an issue. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
I should have been more specific earlier about this - the barking does not bother me but it bothers one of my neighbors (very grumpy) and I believe that my dogs have the right to be outside playing and having fun and barking (like dogs do) so i was hoping to get some constructive advice on how to battle this without me necessarily being outside with them all the time.-
First, dogs bark. That's what they do. If you don't want barking, get a fish.
QUESTION:
Do the electric collars really stop dogs barking?
I have two dogs soon to be three who will all live outside. They are all big dogs and bark quite load and often. The neighbvours are starting to complain. I was wondering about thoses electric collars its seems cruel but thought id ask around see what everyone else thinks or has used them. Thanks
To all who are goin crazy about my dogs being outside. First of all they receive 3 hour long walks a day are well fed and definately not mistreated being outside. I ahve 2 German Shepherds and one Dogue de Bordeaux and it is not feasable to keep all of them indoors.
They have a more than sufficient sized Kennel with heating might I add and a very large run which takes up my whole garden area.
People forget that dogs were only introduced to houses in the 60's and that at the end of the day they are animals not people. You are being even more cruel by mollycoddling your dog pretending its a human. Ruining it health feeding it rubbish. My dogs do not lack love or affection and are the most well behaved dogs u will ever meet. So do not judge me on my preference 2 keep dogs outside when most of you probably have a fat yappy untrained house dog.
As 4 the collar, I am not keen on the idea but as Im moving 2 a posh area with larger garden again 4 my again i want them to be very quiet.-
ANSWER:
Sometimes the bunny huggers are just to funny on here.
Here ,, think about this!
"there is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance --- that principle is contempt prior to investigation."
Herbert SpencerWhen used as intended there is nothing cruel about electric bark collars. They give the dog the choice, they quickly understand that when they have the collar on that barking has consequences.
The problem with bark collars is that "they quickly understand that when they have the collar on". It's called becoming 'collar wise'. One thing dogs are not is stupid, and it will only take a day or two for a dog to figure out when it can bark and when it can not. So while bark collars can be effective to an extent, a person is still far better off to teach their dog to be quiet 'on command'.
QUESTION:
What is the best way to stop your two dogs from excessively barking?
I have two dogs, a pitbull/retreiver mix and black lab/retreiver mix, and the one is about 5 years old while the other is getting close to being 8. The main problem is that they have been raised in a household where there were hardly any visitors besides the mailman and a few friends etc. Now that we have moved, we have more people over and there is more excitement around the house. My two dogs do not stop barking. And they continue even if you tell them to stop and such, they go on and on. Eventually, if someone is in the house long enough, they will stop barking and rest...but then as soon as that person gets up to get a drink both dogs jump to their feet and start loudly barking once again. I was considering getting shock collars for them both to try and stop most of the barking but I wanted to get advice from you guys first. Thanks!-
ANSWER:
Barking is generally considered a normal behavior that most dogs display. Some breeds tend to bark more than others, and domesticated dogs seem to bark more frequently and for different reasons than wild dogs. Barking is, after all, a method by which dogs communicate with one another and with their human companions.
However, dogs that bark in excess can become annoying or downright disruptive to the general peace. Some cities have ordinances to govern the barking of dogs and assess fines or other penalties to people who own dogs that bark excessively. Barking has even been known to cause neighborhood disputes and subsequent court battles.It is prudent, therefore, to learn how to control your dog's barking. To do so, it is important to understand the reasons that dog bark.
Why Do Dogs Bark?
We've identified seven general reasons for barking. Each generates a different kind of bark with a unique sound.1. Barking to induce play. This bark is generally muffled, with accompanying tail wagging and the characteristic crouching with head lowered to the ground, hindquarters raised. Dogs will stop barking as the play proceeds. If you do not play with the dog, the animal will eventually give up and stop barking.
2. Barking to discipline young. This sound usually involves a snap and a sharp bark, uttered when puppies or younger dogs do something that irritates an older dog. The bark itself generally does not persist, as one or two warnings usually stop younger animals in their tracks.
3. Barking to warn of danger. This is a deep, repeated bark. The dog's tail will be motionless or lowered to the ground and the dog's forelimbs will be widely spaced on the ground. The barking will generally persist until the source of danger is removed or until the dog is able to retreat to a position of safety.
4. Barking to threaten intruders. This bark may include an angry growl. The dog may raise its hackles and the hair on its back and tail. The dog will plant all four feet squarely and assume a fighting stance. As the dog barks, the teeth and gums will be readily visible. To stop such a bark, you must either remove the intruder or remove the dog from the situation. Sometimes, stepping to the dog's side and assuring it that all is well will cause it to stop barking.
5. Curiosity barking. In general, this bark is displayed when there is some activity near a dog, but in such a place where the animal cannot have a good look. It is as if the dog is saying, "Hey, what's up?" The dog will display excitement and tend to pace erratically with a slightly wagging tail. To stop the barking, all you have to do is let the dog see what it is curious about.
6. Barking for companionship. This is an incessant, repetitive bark, accompanied by a relatively motionless tail and concentration toward the area most associated with the dog's owners. The solution to this type of bark is to spend more time with the dog and to allow the dog access to the area where humans spend their time. This bark is often displayed by dogs that are ignored, tied out by themselves or locked up alone.
7. Barking for reward. Finally, dogs can be inadvertently trained to bark and will persist with remarkable resistance. Barking can become associated with almost any activity that leads to reward. For instance, a dog that barks at garbage trucks because they intrude within its territory will learn that persistent barking leads to the disappearance of the trucks. This rewards the barking behavior, and a cycle is begun that is difficult to break. Persistent barking can then generalize to other objects-school buses, neighbors walking by, children on the way to school, the paper boy, mailman, milkman and so on. To break the cycle, it is necessary to interrupt the natural system of reward.
Solutions to Barking
The first five reasons for barking are rarely the cause of "excessive" or "annoying" barking. They are usually specific to certain situations and short-lived.The sixth and seventh reasons are those most likely to be considered problem barking, and they are not unrelated.
Barking for companionship can turn into barking for reward: The dog barks to get its owner's attention, the owner comes to the dog to tell it to be quiet, perhaps petting it or playing with it, and goes away again. The dog is quiet while the owner is there, but has learned that barking will bring the owner back. Thus the system of barking and reward is established.
A solution, again, is to spend more time with your dog and have it near you rather than tied up somewhere separate from you.
However, if your dog is separated from you and it begins to bark to get your attention, do not immediately go to the dog. It must learn that barking will not guarantee your presence.
By spending more time with the dog at regular intervals not instigated by barking, your dog will feel more assured that it will get sufficient attention from you and will not have as much inclination to bark for companionship.
How do you teach a barking dog to distinguish between friends and strangers?
The solution is to show the dog that certain individuals (garbage collectors, mailmen, milkmen) are, indeed, friends.
To accomplish this, the dog has to be introduced to these people and given an opportunity to get to know them. While this is not always practical, it is nonetheless a potential solution.
As you restrain your dog, stop delivery people and have a short conversation with them, letting them meet the dog for a brief period. Repeat and lengthen the process over the next few weeks.
Eventually, your dog should accept these individuals and all will be well until your regular mailman is sick and another takes his place.
What do you do with a dog that barks at guests in your house?
One solution is to take the dog to another room and give it something to do. Or, if the guest comes to your home often and you don't want to have to lock up the dog every time, work to gradually introduce one to the other. Have the guest get on his knees, pet the dog, offer it a treat, and more or less become part of the family. Let your dog establish the speed at which this relationship develops: Don't force it, or your dog may become alarmed by a "pushy" guest.
How do you deal with a dog that barks at the phone?
This is simply a case of a dog that has been reward- ed for barking at the phone ringing. When the dog barks, someone even- tually answers the phone and it stops ringing. To stop your dog from doing this, have a friend call and let the phone ring until the dog loses interest. Continue over a period of days, and in time the dog will learn that barking at the phone ac- complishes nothing.
Finally, what do you do with the dog that barks while you are away from home?
There are several possible solutions. One is to act as if you are leaving, then stand outside the door until the dog barks. When it does, return and scold it verbally. Another is to get your dog a cormpanion - but you might end up with two barkers!
A third is to use a sound-activated tape recorder. When the dog barks, the sound switch turns on the tape recorder for a minute. The tape plays your voice scolding the dog. Some systems can repeat as many as 45 times while you are away.
The best way to reduce your dog's barking is to pay attention to the reasons for the bark. If you can satisfy the dog's needs, barking will automatically be reduced. By the same token, learned barking can be extremely persistent. Internal rewards can cause the cycle to go on for years. The best solution is prevention, so be aware of the possibilities and work to stop problem barking before it starts.
QUESTION:
When ever I let my two dogs outside, they always end up barking constantly. How do I train them to stop?
How do I get my two dogs to stop barking constantly whenever I let them outside in my backyard, not involving and eloctronic collars or anything like that.-
ANSWER:
Go out with them with a squirt bottle full of water. As soon as they bark tell them "quiet!!" and squirt them in the face. Dogs don't like the water in their face. You have to be very consistent especially if you've let them get away with it for any length of time. You also have to be sure to praise them (and give treats if they work for treats) when they are quiet. If you see they're about to bark, just say "uh-uh" - works better than saying no all the time. Be consistent and reward for good behaviour.
QUESTION:
If a person farts in a dogs face, will it stop barking at you?
I saw it on the dog whisperer once where he made a dog turn around in front of another dog behind a fence and the dog behind the fence sniffed the other dogs butt and then the dog stopped barking at him when he passes by...was wondering if it works with people and dogs behind a fence?-
ANSWER:
My Uncle Skeeter happens to be a well known dog whisperer locally, and he has also been asked this same question a number of times. The answer he gave me, is that it is based on your food intake, and the scent of the gas that your passing. If your diet consists of nutrients (primarilly high fiber foods, fruits, vegetables) the dog will usually tone down its barking. However, If your diet is made up of fast foods (specifically white castle or churchs chicken) the dog not only barks more, but just may bite you.
QUESTION:
How do i get my dogs to stop barking when i come home?
My dogs bark when i get home and other people too!HELP!!!
-
ANSWER:
the best thing to do when a dog is attention seeking (this sounds like attention seeking behavior) is to ignore them-flat out ignore them walk away don't pet them don't talk to them NOTHING it sounds mean but if you talk to them, even to scold them, you are giving them what they want: you are giving them attention. And bygiving them what they want when they do negative things (like bark) you are not only teaching them that all they have to do is misbehave and then they can have whatever they want but you are also giving them the position of alpha, alpha is what you need to be and your dogs should never assume an alpha roll over you otherwise they own you and that's not a good thing (a dog that assumes an alpha roll over its' owner tends to not follow any rules nor obey any commands until the owner takes back the alpha roll which can be hard to do wihtout professional help and alot of reconditioning training)...once they calm down and stop barking reward them with as much treats, toys, petting, playing, and even a walk to the dog park...reward them as much as you can whenever they are not barking and ignore them entirely when they bark (have everyone else around do the same) and within a week your dogs will not only have a stronger bond with you but the barking will have greatly improved...may even have stopped entirely if you follow my directions exactly
good luck ---hope this helps
QUESTION:
Does the bark off product really stop dogs from barking? and how does it work?
Just saw the bark off commercial and it seems like a great product but im not sure if it works. How does it stop a dog from barking?-
ANSWER:
Bark Off does work. I have one it does work. Please use it when it is absolutely needed. For example uncontrollable barking etc. There is no way it can cause tumors like somebody here. Because it is somebody you don't make them wear. it is something that you keep it. It is just an ultrasonic sound devices.Next part of your question. When you want to tell your dog not to stop. Just press the button and keep it near (remember only works 20-30 feet) if your dog keeps barking Bark Off will trigger the ultrasonic sound and it makes the dog to stop barking.
It is true barking is the way of communication. even though we all love our dogs it can cause problems with controllable sound especially if you live in an apartment
so be courteous to others
QUESTION:
how do i get my dogs to stop barking?
every time my dogs hear s noise if someone walks into the room, they bark like crazy. how do i get my dogs to stop barking at everything?-
ANSWER:
You have to teach them a command to stop. Use the same words every time. Something simple like "Quiet." Say it like you mean it, and as soon as they stop barking, praise them like crazy. Then distract them with something else so they don't start barking again. A treat, a toy, something really fun. And remember, depending on what breed they are...some dogs are just barkers by nature.
QUESTION:
How to get my dog to stop barking at other dogs?
We recently moved and we dont have a fence anymore. My dog is about 50 pounds and is tied down on a lead. He barks at dogs going by. He growls, he barks he just goes nuts. I have tried yanking on his lead but nothing helps. He is driving us nuts. Any advice?-
ANSWER:
Why is he tied to begin with? A tied dog feels a lot less secure being restrained, and will have a much greater urge to defend its territory. The simple solution would be to not keep him tied up any more.Either get your yard fenced, or get up and take him for a walk around the block for the chance to go to the bathroom and actually get some exercise. You can even just walk him on your yard for a quick bathroom break. Tying him isn't very useful.
I hate that with a passion. I just got some new neighbors and they have an old pit bull. That dog barks constantly, all day all night. I kid you not. My outside dog (a pit bull mixed breed) just let them...lol They were too big for him to fight I guess.
QUESTION:
How do you stop dogs barking when people come to the door?-
ANSWER:
Teach an incompatible behavior. A "go to your mat" or "crate" command would be great because you can teach this to your dogs and make it so rewarding for them to seek out their mat whenever you tell them to, wherever they are in the house. First, reward them a bunch with amazing treats when they choose to step on to their mat, or into their crate. Next, start holding them back from reaching their mat/crate (in a fun way - hold them by the chest, then release them so they're excited to race to their mat/crate for a reward) Keep repeating this, and then you can start to actually say "Get on your mat!" or whatever you'd like, when they are flying over to their place. Then, set up a "person ringing the doorbell" scenario with a patient friend. Have lots of yummy treats stashed (on yourself, and in a handy bowl that you can reach quickly) and keep practicing your "go to your mat" behavior. Remember that dogs don't speak English, so it's best to not say anything at all until the dog is reliably running to that great spot that you pay him so much to be in. Repeat with as many distractions as you can think of!
QUESTION:
Should I get a shock or citrus collar for my crazy psycho dog that won't stop barking at other dogs?
He is a maltese, 3 years old. I have tried so many times to train him but when he is outside, he doesn't see me or the ground or anything, he sees the dog and goes CRAZY and I can't do anything. When I snap the leash back he doesn't care, he keeps on barking like crazy and he won't stop until the dog is out of his sight. I want to get him a bark controlling collar which should I get?-
ANSWER:
Neither. Your dog is poorly socialized and not trained. The spray collar likely won't work and the electrocution collar will either cause your dog to shut down or to go even crazier.You hire a proper trainer and get the dog to listen to you and you learn how to correct and control the dog.
Until proper training has taken place, an electrocution collar has no place in your hands or on your dog.
Your question is like asking "My child cries when she sees Lost. What should I do, spank her or slap her?"
