Walking Barking Dog Toy

I have been thinking lately about the practice of using choke collars and jerking the lead as a "correction" that many people still use when training and handling their dog. The most common 'use' of the 'jerk' correction I have noticed is when a dog owner wants their dog to 'heel'. Over the years, I have witnessed many dog handlers telling their dog 'heel' as they have issued a big leash correction. And usually the result of this 'correction' is frustrating to the dog owner as the dog pulls even harder against the leash. 'Heel' is supposed to be the cue for walk in the appropriate place. Think about it. If you were constantly jerked, pulled or tugged when you were next to, slightly in front of, or behind your owner, would you choose to be in a 'heel' position or would you forge ahead or fall behind to escape or evade any future corrections. If I had experienced a correction like that while hearing the cue 'heel' I would also want to head for the hills when I heard that word. Inadvertently sometimes the 'heel' cue becomes a warning signal to the dog that a correction is coming and thus the cue evokes a 'move away behavior' from the owner. It is far more pleasant and effective for a dog to learn appropriate leash manners when they are taught where to walk nicely in relation to their walking partner rather than being corrected for getting it wrong. If the dog is reinforced for correct placement and pace then they will no longer forge ahead or lag behind. A dog training 'cue' should be music to the ears of a dog. A dog who has been trained using effective, efficient and pleasant methods will happily respond to a 'cue' and training your dog will be a more pleasant experience for all. So let's take the 'choke' out of training and replace it with clear concise instructions that builds your dog's behavior repertoire, sets your dog up for success and rewards them when they get it right. This is a far more pleasant situation for both owner and dog. In addition to being an ineffective training method, there are real health concerns when a dog's head is jerked around.

Karen Overall (MA, VMD, PhD, DACVB, Clinical Behavioral Medicine for small Animals) says "In a retrospective study on spinal pain, injury or changes in dogs conducted in Sweden, Hallgreen (1992) found that 91% of dogs with cervical anomalies experienced harsh jerks on a leash or had a long history of pulling on the lead. The use of choke collars was also over represented in this group. This strongly suggests that leash corrections are potentially injurious"

Robin Walker (BVetMed MRCVs) says "In 30 years of practice (including 22 as a veterinary advisor to a police dog section) I have seen numerous severely sprained necks, cases of fainting, transient foreleg paralysis and hind leg ataxia after robust use of the choke chain. In the 1970's, when the practice of slamming the dog sideways with a jerk that brought the foreparts clear off the ground and two or three feet towards the handler became popular, the resulting painful condition was known as "Woodhouse neck" in this practice. Some of these cases exhibited misalignment of cervical vertebrae on radiographs. It suggested that an existing spondylopathy renders these dogs more vulnerable to injury. My ophthalmology colleagues have decided views on the relation between compression of the neck, intraocular pressure disturbances and damage to the cervical sympathetic nerve chain resulting in Horner's syndrome. I personally have seen a case of swollen eyes with petechial scleral haemorrhage and a number of temporarily voiceless dogs."

To learn the steps and mechanics of teaching your dog to 'walk nicely' or to 'heel,' contact your local DogSmith. Your local DogSmith will take you through the stages of a) teaching your dog to stand while on a leash without pulling and lunging, b) teaching you the 'walk nicely' behavior in steps so you build on a solid foundation, and c) of introducing you to some great management tools to use while you teach your dog new and acceptable behaviors allowing you to walk and exercise your dog without reinforcing the old and unacceptable behaviors.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Help! I need to find & replace a "walking dog" toy that my dog chewed up. Does anyone know where I can find it?
It belongs to my niece. It is a tan and white stuffed dog, with a cord to a bone-shaped control handle. The buttons on the bone make up a dog face, and will make the dog bark & walk. My niece got it for Christmas last year. I've been looking online, but haven't found it yet. Suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
I'd try the local department store/s e.g. Big W, Target, Walmart (Wherever depending on where you come from). Also try any local paper/s, markets or op shops.

It's a black and white dog with a red button you push on it's back that lights up and makes the dog bark and "walk" by rolling on it's wheels. It also has four different colored small buttons on it's side in different shapes and each plays a different animal sound. THIS IS MY DAUGHTERS' FAVORITE TOY AND IT BROKE BEYOND REPAIR. I WOULD DO ANYTHING TO FIND ANOTHER ONE. There was no brand as like I said it was a generic toy. Let me know if anyone knows where I can find this. THANK YOU!

  3. QUESTION:
How can I stop my dog barking for her toy?
Every day when I take my dog for a walk as soon as we get to the field we use she will bark and bark until I throw her ball for her. When she does eventually bring the ball back to me she will bark and bark until I throw it for her again. To make matters worse her bark is ear shattering so is annoying to me and anyone within earshot. She is not aggressive with it she is just impatient to play

    • ANSWER:
I think you should ignore her until she stops barking. When he stops barking paise her and then treat her with her toy. Also, it would be a good idea to shake a can of pennies when she barks so she'll stop. She'll associate the barking with the annoying noise.

  7. QUESTION:
What's the best toy dog breed to have as a family pet?
I'm thinking about getting a toy dog :) Maybe one that enjoys long walks, is obedient, doesn't bark alot, and is easily trained. But what toy dog is like that? is there one toy dog breed that is very intelligent etc? thanks. x
I have an older sister in her 20s, an 18 year old bro, and I'm 14.

    • ANSWER:
I'd pick a Doberman or a Rottweiler, they have a reputation that exceeds them, and proves them to be aggressive dogs, remember it's the people not the dog.
They are actually very loving, protecting dogs that are great for companions. I'm 15 and I grew up with a rottweiler not to mention I'm getting on of my own and I'm only 15. Alot of people use rottweilers for therapy dogs, because they are so loving, and dobermans alike. Although, these dogs do have a risk of health issues just keep good care of the dog, with regular vet check up's and good healthy food.
Alot of small "toy" dogs have the same chances to bark as a large breed.
pretty much every breed enjoys long walks, not just small ones.
Dobermans and Rottweilers are very intelligent, and is why alot of family's have then, or they work in professions such as police, and therapy dogs.

  9. QUESTION:
Is this a good Dog walking ad?
A Good Dog is a Tired Dog and a Tired Dog is a Happy Dog

Why do dogs need to be walked?
It keeps them active and healthy. Most dogs that are not taken on walks have some behavior problems. Being destructive is caused by boredom. And by taking dogs on walks stimulates their brain. It gets them more active and they are then tired when they come home. So they rather take a nap then destroy some toy or pillow. And maybe they always bark at dogs because they aren’t taken out enough to get used to them. They probably rarely see dogs so when they do see them it is soo weird. So if you take them on walks often the other dogs won’t be so weird instead they would just be something normal. And then your dog learns they are not worth barking at.

If you are at work too much or your dog has more energy than you do or if you are busy enough taking care of your kids and you can’t take your dog on walks. I am the person to call. I live locally in your area. I live on Abington Drive. I am 15 years old, and that will make most people unsure about trusting me with their dog. But I do offer a trial run; I will come to your house with either my mom or dad I will introduce myself, answer any questions you have. Then I will take your dog or dogs on a 30 minute trial run. And come back and see if you are satisfied with me walking your dog. And if you are satisfied, then we can discuss schedules and how long the walks will be and the costs.

This chart is an estimate on the costs of each walk. But every dog is different on walks. I try to keep the price for your dog the same as the one on the chart. But it can vary, depending on their behavior on the walk. But after your trial run I will tell you the cost of each walk, if you decide to let me walk your dog.
(on the ad this is a actual chart which is very easy to understand but when i pasted it onto this it came out all confusing.)
    3o Minute Walks

    45 Minute Walks
    60 minute Walks
    1st- Small Dog-
    2nd- st Small Dog-
    2nd-st Small Dog-
    2nd-
    1st-Medium Dog-
    2nd-st Medium Dog-
    2nd-st Medium Dog-
    2nd-
    1st- Large Dog-
    2nd- 1st Large Dog- $ 10
    2nd-st Large Dog-
    2nd-
    Additional charges

    - per poop I have to pick up

That is the end of the ad. Now where the charges for each walk are. On microsoft it is a actual chart. With the amount of time on top and the size of dog with the price that goes with it and then how much each additional dog will be. And then additional charges. And on microsoft it has bold letters for the title and color too, but not too much. and it has bullet points too.

So is a good ad. Is it too much, would anybody read all of it. Or would they just trash it. I live in this neighborhood my whole life so i know who does and who doesnt own a dog. And i would only put the fliers in people's mailboxes or doors if i know they own a dog. And I am only going to walk dogs in my area which has over 25 neighborhood streets. And i talked to my parents and they say it is ok.
only reason it is per poop is because the bags do cost money but i might stratch the poop expense
I havent yet put a contact information on.
    So should i put my
    email
    phone number
    cell number
on there and which one should i put on

I was thinking my email and then if they are interested and i meet them and i am going to walk their dogs then i give them my home phone number
by the way it takes up one sheet of normal paper that you would put in a home printer
So the dollar per poop wasnt my idea. And i already said i am going to scratch the idea. So i am not going to charge per poop the more i thought about it the more stupid i realized it was

    • ANSWER:
I think theres too much writing tbh, anyone who owns a dog would already know why they need to walk it so I would leave that bit out.

Just generally cut back on some of the writing as it seems a bit too much and overwhelming. No one would want to read it all and it would deter from potential customers.

I like the idea of the chart though.

  12. QUESTION:
Do Ultrasonic Dog Bark Silencers really work? Advantages? Disadvantages?
We have an elderly next door neighbor who will not walk her dog (toy Dachshund) and insists on putting it on the patio next to ours (attached condo) for 6 hours a day. It barks the entire time without provocation because it is a hound and wants back inside. We've had to call the authorities once and they gave a warning about the animal noise. We are dog lovers but not lovers of the constant barking so we are looking at ultrasonic / humane alternatives to try to distract the dog into not barking.

We are looking at a particular ultrasonic wall-mounted unit that triggers when dog barks are heard then sends an untrasonic signal which prompts the dog to stop barking, I believe through distraction and hopefully conditioning to discourage the constant barking.

Have you used an unltrasonic device like this for dogs? They come in collar versions too which is not an option for us (it's not our dog) so we must ust wall mount. Do these things really work? Any downside to using them?
With regard to ordinances, yes, I've already checked those and we have grounds to call for animal noise as we already have done. The first call warrants a warning. The next may warrant a fine, so on and so forth. We are nice people and this neighbor has been a friend but it's her stubborn daughter who has forced this dog on her elderly mother who won't disagree. Relations have become strained with this off-premise daughter (she lives down the street) but with her mother's power of attorney, we have to deal with her in homeowner's meetings. We're not wanting to force tickets on them to achieve compliance which is why we seek a humane alternative.

We recently installed ultrasonic devices to get rid of bugs and mice (a rare occasion here but this is in the country) and those devices work very well. Some dog lovers believe anything ultrasonic will hurt dogs ears but these untrasonic dog bark eliminators are guaranteed to be humane and non-harmful. But do they work?
For those terribly concerned with canine's well being, I think if we installed one of these devices and it caused the dog to run away yelping or to whine and cower in the corner, I think we would understand that is not good for the dog and we would stop using it. But dog whistles are ultrasonic to humans and are not inhumane. I have a hard time believing that if we emit any ultrasonic sound to discourage barking, it would cause irreparable harm to the dog such that we would be sued, although relations are strained with the neighbor and daughter such that I wouldn't doubt they could try it -- IF -- they had actual grounds for a law suit which I don't believe they would have unless the dog showed actual suffering and hearing loss.

    • ANSWER:
They aren't illegal. But they don't work well at all. The dogs ignore them. I have neighbors with beagles they breed. We tried one. It didn't work.

  13. QUESTION:
What toy breed dog would be good to get for a beginner dog owner who is afraid of dogs and their bark?
I get scared when larger breed dogs growl or bark.
I got attacked by a corgi before and certain breeds make me nervous, but the breeds that I like are : Maltese, poodles, schnauzers, pugs and miniature mutts.

Also, due to a mild allergy, dogs with coarse hair like labs tend to make my skin itch. Yet, poodles and cavalier king Charles spaniels and those breeds mentioned above didn't make me itch.

A dog would give me an excuse to walk around and not look weird, especially when I go too close to people w/dogs.

    • ANSWER:
small dogs do tend to bark much more, especially when they're young. A good idea for you may be to adopt an older dog (of a breed that you're not afraid of and doesn't make you itch) who's out of the excitable, snappy, puppy stages and is a little bit more calm. This doesn't necessarily mean an old dog, but I reccomend one who's at least about two years old. There are many, many of these types of dogs in animals shelters because so many people always want a puppy that they forget that the ones who are a little older still need good homes too.

I think this would be a good idea for you becase it's easier to judge the personality of an adult dog than a puppy, and this way you would have the best chance of choosing one who could be a good friend to you and meet your needs well. If you're looking for a small dog, they tend to have a much longer lifespan than larger dogs (I've known several toy dogs who are 15+ years) so you don't need to worry that choosing one who's not a little puppy wil make your time with him or her too short.

      Good luck!

  15. QUESTION:
How can I make my dog stop barking when she's home alone?
My dog never barks when I am home, so I always assumed she was also quiet when I was away. I've lived in a single unit house since I got her, so there wouldn't have ever been a reason for anyone complain though. Recently, I moved into an apt. The unit beside me is vacant, but my landlord said that on multiple occassions, he has heard my dog bark when he enters the vacant unit. He said that the barking persists the entire time he's in the unit, and will subside as he leaves. Obviously, he is unhappy about this (as am I, given that it could leave me homeless!) I know there are things I could do to decrease the likelihood of her barking--walking her longer in the mornings, leaving toys with treats for her while I'm gone, etc. BUT I need a quick fix, and something that is basically fail proof...soooo....what works?? She's a rather large dog (around 65 lbs, size of a small boxer), so her bark is pretty loud when she does bark, and the landlord is threatening to terminate the lease if I don't shut her up, so I need advice from people who know from experience please! thanks!
    p.s. I'm on a budget,so let's be financially reasonable, please!! :)

    • ANSWER:
Take her to day care when you leave for work; that's what I did.

  18. QUESTION:
Protection from dog attack while walking my dogs?
I can't believe it, but we've had two separate dog attack instances this week while walking our little dogs. I won't reduce the quality of my dogs' life by keeping them inside for fear of being attacked during walks, but yet I don't know how to ensure their safety either.

We've got two toy breed dogs - a 3-year old Shih Tzu and a 4-month-old Pug. The Shih Tzu weighs only 9 pounds and is completely submissive to other dogs. The Pug is only a friendly little 8-pound puppy. Neither dog would stand a chance if a bigger dog wanted to hurt them.

Earlier this week my husband and teenage daughter were out walking the dogs. A German Shepard bolted out an open front door behind it's owner and attempted to attack our Pug puppy. Fortunately my strong and athletic husband was able to tackle the German Shepherd to the ground and my daughter pulled the puppy out of harm's way before the German Shepherd could hurt it. Still the dog attempted to bite my husband and daughter before my husband overpowered it and it ran back to the owner.

Our Pug puppy is very lucky as my husband seldom walks the dogs and if I had been in his place there is no way I could've protected either dog and I probably would've ended up being bitten as well. (By the way we did contact the police and a report was filed. The German Shepard was warned by police that he has to control his dog. As no one sustained any physical injury we decided not to prosecute.)

Then yesterday morning I was walking the dogs down a different street. Three large breed dogs including an ominious German Shepherd mix were barking ferociously and pounding hard on the front window of the house from the inside as we walked in front of the house. They were pounding so hard I could see the pane of glase bowing in and out and feared they would break the glass and come after me and my dogs. A few seconds later my fear was realized when they shattered the window and the German Shepherd attempted to jump out to come after us. Fortunately sharp shards of glass protruding through the hole in the window made him think twice long enough for us to make it back home. Today I've seen missing dog signs for that German Shepherd, so he apparently eventually got out and could be roaming free in the neighborhood - so the nightmare may not be over.

My husband works 12-15 hours a day and can't protect us every time I walk the dogs. What do I do? Someone suggested I carry a ballbat. How do I protect myself and my little dogs from vicious dogs?

    • ANSWER:
Dog mase, a bat, a heavy object. Anything.

More importantly, you should be contacting animal control/police to report these incidents.

  19. QUESTION:
How do I stop my dog from barking while I am at work or out of the house?
I have a little foxy/chihuahua who is a complete angel when I'm at home but have been receiving complaints from the council that she barks all day while I'm at work. I have tried heaps of things like leaving the telly/radio on, heaps of toys, a piece of my clothing, bones, long walks etc.. I don't know what to do?? And I don't want to lose my dog or cop the 0 fine. Please help me!

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like separation anxiety - you will need to re-train her behaviour.
As she is only barking whilst you are out try one of the collars that emit a high pitch noise when the dog barks.
If that fails try teaching her by going through your normal routine that you have before leaving the house, go out, lock the door, then unlock it & go back in. Give her loads of praise & a titbit if you want. Repeat this maybe 10-15 times with a 10-15 minute gap in between. Then increase the time between locking & unlocking the door ( e.g. count to 5 ). As you repeat this and increase the time between leaving and returning she will learn it is OK to be alone because you will be back.
It will take time but if you keep at it you should start to see results.
If she is quiet when you are out and barks when you come home just ignore her till she is quiet again.

  20. QUESTION:
How can i train my dog to not run up the road barking at people when they are outside?
I have a toy rat terrier and she thinks she is alapha dog. whenever she is outside whether she slipped out the door or we are outside with her and there are either neighbors getting out of their cars to go inside or a person just walking by the house she always has to charge at the person, with her hair sticking up on her back, barking as loud as she possibly can. I really do not want to use an electric fence or an electric collar. I have tried several methods and none really seem to work. Is there any possible way to train her not to do this?

    • ANSWER:
Some people have told me that all rat terriers are like that. i have a jack/rat terrier dog and he barks at EVERYONE he dosent knoooww! its so anoyying, we cant even have people over. what i have done and has kinda helped is putting him in a room alone when someone comes over and if were outside we jus try to get him around people more often, so they get used to me being around new people =]]

    • ANSWER:
      Get it a shock collar?
Alot of people think thats crowl but it is not at all.. all dogs need corrections with bad behaviour and when your not around I would say thats an awesome way to do it :)

If not I would suggest just working on it.
Find out what makes them bark
maybe try confiencing them that its bed time when its actually not
Hid near them and if they bark do something to correct them.
Try not to let them see you.

Or even try making them bark during the day.
and when they do give them a correction
and when they dont over exadurate a reward :)

theres alot of creative ways to do it but I weould think it depends on the layout of your house and there daily routine :) -goodluck though, I hope it works out!

  22. QUESTION:
how to stop my dog from barking when i leave home?
we have to crate him otherwise he will rip up the house but even we didnt crate him one time, he still barked. i have tried everything people said on here. includings toys, kongs, food, water, music, tv, radio everything! but he still barks. and he barks very loud as well. its annoying the neighbours. i'm not buying a bark collar or muzzle, they are cruel and too expensive
thanks if anyone can help me
he usually barks for 5 minutes very loudly and then stops. sometimes he'll eat his food first and then start barking
i take him for walks everyday. i just came back from an hour long walk at the park and i needed to go shopping. i thought he would be too tired too bark so i was pretty sure. sure enough, i come home tom find him barking again
    how do i stop it?
    exercise doesnt even work!
we live in flats and the windows are too high up anyway. and he's in a crate as mentioned last time

    • ANSWER:
my pom does that too. it's very annoying cause i live in a apartment and neighbors complain. i bought thosr rawhide gum sticks for dogs (not that expensive and good quality). everytime i leave the house i give it to her. i know its a waste of money giving one everytime you leave the house but personally, i think it is worth it. it's very delicious and good for dogs. get the one that comes in a pack. when ur gonna be out for just a lil while tell another person to calm him down or just ignore him he'll eventually stop. if ur leaving for a long time give a gum stick. hope u the best of luck =]

Buff my dog is a Rottweiler and loves barking at strangers and other dog?
Buffy the female rottweiler and She is 4 years old and is gentle natured.I have trained her to become a dancing dog and she is eager to learn new tricks. But taking her for walks is a different matter!

She has been head shy ever since she was a puppy. We can’t take the other dogs for walk with her anymore because she teaches them bad manners.

I take her for walks using a harness because she is easer to manage.

When buffy sees another dog her attention is totally fixed on them. I have tried distracting her and making her focus on my self using her toys but she ignores them and treat such as chicken, meat and dog treats but she doesn’t except anything. When she sees a dog in the distance or close up, she starts barking, pulling, jumping, standing on her back legs or stalking position. She will never bite the other dog but just will act aggressive. But she also does this when she people.

When she acts aggressive I sometimes hold her harness or just pull her on

    • ANSWER:
Rottweilers are a guardian breed. She is trying to protect you or thinks she is.

I would work with a dog behaviorist or a trainer to improve the communication so you can communicate better with eachother and she gets to the point that she is focused on what you are wanting her to do rather than going after the other dog. If you just pull on her harness without verbally correcting her, you are just along for the ride and not giving her any alternate instructions.

It is a wonder to behold when an owner says something and the Rottie just sits/lays down next to them rather than going nuts. I know you have trained your dog to do certain things, but not with distractions.

And are you sure she is being aggresive because barking pulling and jumping can be an excited but not aggressive dog too. But either way - work with a behaviorist or a trainer. Because she is head shy i may opt for the behaviorist.

My toy poodle sits on top of the settee all day and will bark at anyone he sees across the street or walking past, it is constant and if anyone walks past our house he will jump off the settee and run frantically barking backwards and forwards and back to the top of the settee. This constant barking is giving me a headache and I dont know how to stop him. I know he is being protective but how do we stop him doing this

    • ANSWER:

  26. QUESTION:
    Barking dog problem....PLZ read below.?
My border collie barks at us in the house, rather for us to play with her or she will just bark at a toy. She barks if my son is eating and sometimes barks for nothing while looking at one of us. She is getting plenty of walks and free time off the lead and we play with her in the house too BUT this barking can get very annoying, any ideas on how to stop this.

    • ANSWER:
I do not agree with a bark collar - certainly not before trying other methods. A dog will become very frustrated with this collar on - it does nothing to curb the source of the problem - only punishes the dog.

The basic principle I advocate is prevention - if you know the dog is barking when your son eats, put the dog on lead and when she barks say "quiet". If she stops barking, say "good quiet" and praise her. You can give her a treat at the beginning.

If she continues to bark out - give a light pop on the lead and say "no, quiet".

My Doberman will bark for the sake of barking - just like your dog. She has learned it gets her attention and like your dog, she has enough exercise and attention. She is just a very smart dog!

She got in the annoying habit of barking when I was on the phone - because (like your dog) she learned that I was preoccupied and I didn't correct her. It became almost instantaneous - I picked up the phone and the dog which had been quiet all day -started barking.

So, I put her on lead when I was on the phone, and when she barked - I corrected her.

      It stopped.

People are so adverse to discipline (it seems) that they allow the dog to develop behaviours that over time, lead to other problems.

You cannot always ignore it - sometimes you have to show your dog.

The main point: NEVER correct a dog after the fact. You must have a lead on the dog - and the correction must be immediate -

NEVER hit your dog - this is destructive.

DO NOT crate or send the dog out of the room. Dogs are not children ad do not understand punishment.

BE FAIR. If a dog is being ignored (becuase maybe you are ill that day, and she didn't get her walk, and she's fired up) dont be harsh - I realize my dogs barking is done for many reasons, and I don't treat them all the same.

What you describe is a patterned barking that should be dealt with directly - with a collar and leash correction.

  27. QUESTION:
    Dog barking and chewing?
Recently (as in a few hours ago) we adopted a new black lab from a shelter. She sounded like a great dog-- Mellow, isn't possesive, likes cat, children, dogs. So we adopted her.

She was perfectly fine.. until she stayed about an hour in our house >>

She starts barking. We have another dog for her to socialize with, and we're giving her attention (when she isn't barking). But she refuses to be quiet. We ignore her, we distract her, nothing works >>

And then she chews. We bought her a dog bed. She chews and tugs at it.. eventually I gave her an old toy of mine, and she was happy with that for about 30 minutes. Then she barks some more. I show her the toy. she picks it up, walks around with it a bit, drops it, and barks some more.

She's doing a bit of a whimper, then a bark. Then another whimper, repeat. And it's getting annoying really fast. I have school soon, and I don't want to get no sleep because a dog who barks all night.

So, how can I stop her from barking? Please don't suggest surgery or something, we've spent enough money on getting the home set for her.

    • ANSWER:
I agree with the separation anxiety. New home, new people, new surroundings, new bed, new playmate... meltdown.
A tired dog is a good dog. Before bedtime, go on a nice looooooong walk! Better yet, jog or run. If you have a bike, you can get a product that attaches to it and your dog can safely run with you. I have personally used the "Springer" dog jogger, and my dog would run *me* for 3 miles! Check around, there are other similar products you might like better.

  28. QUESTION:
What can I do about my dog barking? UK?
3 days a week when I am in work I go home at lunch time. When the weather is nice I want to leave the dog out in the back garden. There is a 6 foot brick wall so there isn't a chance of him escaping. He has a kennel and plenty of toys and water. One of my neighbours said the dog barked whenever someone walked passed with a dog. He is only out 3 1/2 hours 3 days a week when I'm out. I came back early today and he didn't know I was back and he didn't bark for 1/2 hour. Should I worry about this? It seems a shame to lock him in the house all day.
He chews my didnig suite if left in all day, even if I let him out for a few minutes at lunch time.
    That is dining suite!
Somebody put a note through my door complaing! They didn't sign it so I asked a neighbour. Thanks everyone.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, a barking dog is annoying and leaving a dog shut outside while you are out is risking him being poisoned (especially if he annoys neighbours) or stolen.
      #
Dog theft is on the increase in the UK. Your dog should be happier inside where he is secure, until you get home and can give him time and walk him. Dogs usually relax and sleep during the day so 3.5 hours is fine.

Incidentally electric shock collars are currently trying to be made illegal in the UK, so forget that idea.

ADDED: Can you confine him in a room with no furniture, or even a large crate if only for a few hours.

  29. QUESTION:
    Adorable little barking dog...?
My neighbor has an adorable little Pomeranian who goes out the deck for about 2 hours a couple of times a day. He barks constantly the whole time he's out there. My husband and I have listened in total disbelief as he barked incessantly for the entire duration he was out there. He's doing it now :) I'm just wondering how long can he bark without getting a sore throat or laryngitis? It seems his throat would be exhausted after a few minutes.

I should mention I've visited them before and inside the dog is perfectly behaved. He didn't even bark when I walked in and spent the whole time bringing me toys to toss for him. Lots of things bother me more than a barking dog so I'm not griping, I just want to know how long he could go before his voice plays out or would it even play out eventually? Any thoughts?

    • ANSWER:
my neighbors pom goes longer :) I have no idea, but I have often hoped the barking would annoy them as much as it annoys me- which is only so bad because once it starts, all 8 of my dogs take turns barking back at it. lol

  30. QUESTION:
    Barking Dog Issues? PLEASE HELP.?
This may seem a bit long, but I just want to explain my entire situation and problem. I really need advice!

I have a one year old Eskie named Harvey. I live in an apartment building with neighbors beside me and underneath me. We keep Harvey inside, and we USED to let him run out in the kitchen free with a baby gate as a barrier to the living room. That all ended when I came home one day to a two foot hole chewed up in the lineoleum flooring. So, now he has his "room". It's a very large wire crate. He has plenty of room, so much in fact he can jump and run in circles. We have blankets, and a pillow in there. His food and water bowl are in there with him, as well as a toy/bone. We take him on walks daily.

    Here is my problem:
He has just recently started barking while we are gone. Fortunately, my next door neighbors are two of my best friends, and they are understanding and willing to help anyway they can. I fear the neighbors downstairs won't be so willing to understand.

My next door neighbors have two dogs, which are both female. Last week, one of them went into heat and Harvey played with her in the yard, and is now acting CRAZY. However, I don't know that her being in heat is the sole reason for his barking. The neighbors said that for the past few months, he will bark non-stop for hours one day and then they won't hear him at all for 3-4 weeks. But for the past week, it has been everyday, all day.

I just don't know how to go about handling the situation. How do I make him stop barking if I'm not home? Other than that and pulling on the leash, he is a wonderful dog. It's my first time owning a dog of my own, so I'm kind of lost.

I've read several things online that tell me to say a firm "NO" when he barks, and to ignore him when we get home, and etc. There is so much advice and it's all contradicting the last thing I read. I'm so lost, but I don't want my landlords to get complaints about him and risk having to get rid of him. PLEASE give me your advice on how to break him from barking while we are gone.

    Thanks for your time!
"Greek God"- I refuse to put one of those shock collars on him. He is a good dog, and I believe there are alternative ways to cease the actions rather than sending electric bolts through his body. I've never heard anything good about them. The only thing I've heard is that when it shocks them, it hurts them, so they just start yelping in pain rather than barking out of boredom. But, thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Electric Bark collar, placed high and tight on his neck will stop the BS barking in 3 seconds or less.
I was in the same position as you once and I had a choice to make...it is the ONLY thing that will stop the dog from barking while you are gone, the collar goes on, all barking stops. Hope I helped.

ADD: You are very welcome, however, I must say that you know NOTHING about an E collar that works on BATTERIES.
What shock are you talking about, what electricity that goes through their body?
Its like static electric that you get when you touch a door knob and being a good boy or sweet or whatever will NOT stop the local police, your landlord or your neighbors from telling you to get rid of him. The E collar in the ONLY thing that will put a stop to this behavior while you are not home, but, your dog, good luck!!

  31. QUESTION:
My dog wont stop barking in the morning!!?
I have a 5 months old maltipom (maltese-pomeranian mix). I put him in crate at night and let him out around 7AM. I would take him out to the backyard and keep the door open so he can always go inside the house. After putting him out i would go straight back to my bed (it's 7AM..i cant play with him yet..i'm still very sleepy..).

He would keep on barking on everything (birds on the tree, butterfly, running water, everything!) for about 2 hours. It's really annoying and i'm afraid it will disturb my sleeping neighbors.. What should i do????

He's actually quite calm and never bark during the day unless annoyed. Also, i dont think the problem is because he wants to be around people because i have my maids walking around in the backyard and they would call my dog and throw him toys, but he still wont stop barking!

    Please help..

    Thank u!
haha! I guess i do sound rich and spoiled. But if you live in Indonesia, you too will have at least one maid..

    Thanx anyway, everybody!!

    • ANSWER:
Maids huh...wow, wish I had one. Anyway my dog likes to bark in the mornings too when I'm getting ready for work...it's 7am...I can't play with him yet...I have to get ready for work. haha just joking with ya. I have to stick my head out the door and say "quite" (he knows what that means because of obedience classes). He usually stops. When he does stop barking I say "good quite!" If not I make him come inside and I don't let him back out for a while. Take him to obedience classes and train him to not bark. It worked for me and I have a Basset! Also try a citronella collar, haven't tried it yet but heard lots of good things. Research it on yahoo or google.

  32. QUESTION:
what's the best way to stop my dog from barking?
our dog is a 3 year old staffy.
he's in the backyard during the day.
he has toys, food and water and gets walked 2 times a week.
the backyard's pretty big and adjoins 3 neighbouring properties.
he hates it when our neighbours mow or kick their ball anywhere near our fence, barks and keeps barking even when rewarded for coming to our door.
when he's out for a walk he's very well behaved and will rarely bark even when other dogs are barking at him.
how can i stop this annoying and embarrassing habit?we have taken to bringing him in when he does it but this seems like rewarding him for the behaviour, also we are renting our home and he's not meant to be inside at all! please help
    jnny e
we do love our dog and he is definately a big part of our lives.
as it is winter and freezing down under he's not being walked as much as he should.
he's in doors from late afternoon til early morning and sleeps underneath our bed.
i appreciate you are an animal lover but i don't appreciate being told i don't love my dog.if i didn't he 'd be with another family or at the pound because trust me he is not easy to train regarding chewing digging and destroying things but with patience we have managed to turn him into a great dog except for the barking.
mischief managed:the water spray sounds like a brilliant idea, thank you!!!

    • ANSWER:
I saw it on Oprah. Just squirt him with water in a squirt bottle and that should pause the barking for a second or so and then reward him with a treat. You repeat that and the next time he starts barking he'll stop before you get the chance to squirt him..hopefully. GoodLuck!

  33. QUESTION:
What kind of dog should my aunt get?
She wants a toy sized dog (under 15 pounds)
Very little shedding and does not need professional grooming
She wants it to not be yappy (it can bark though)
She wants a fairly sedentary dog (one walk / day plus playing in her yard)
She wants it to be very cuddly

There are no small children in her home. She has a large yard (fenced).
I suggested an Italian Greyhound. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
      Hmm...

I would suggest a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, they are toy sized, doesn't shed too much but requires weekly brushing (grooming helps bond with her pet!). It is VERY VERY VERY cuddly and will do fine with one walk a day and playing in the yard. It is not yappy like other toy dogs. they do give warning barks if someone rings the doorbell, though.

Italian Greyhounds are fine, too. they can be litter-box trained but are very sensitive to cold.

      Good luck!

  34. QUESTION:
My sister's dog is barking during the day while she is gone, any suggestions?
Unfortunately it has been happening for ten months now but the neighbours only just thought to tell them 3 weeks ago, and have been complaining consistently since! The dog is a Curly Coated Retriever, she has a companion dog (a male Lab x), gets one long walk daily and is allowed indoors during the evening, weekend and night time, the dogs also go camping and boating with my sis and her partner so get lots of variety. They live in a warm climate and the dogs have a comfy kennel each plus a shed if they want. They have kongs and toys during the day. I am a dog trainer and have given them lots of advice but just after any other suggestions. No punishment devices thanks, we use positive reinforcement as much as possible.

    • ANSWER:
you have two choices since there is no way of reenforcing behavior if you have no idea what is happening. Bring them inside or a spray collar. Also try bachs flower remedy, there may be some seperation anxiety happening.

  35. QUESTION:
How do curb my dog's barking for the short periods he's home alone?
Our neighbors have complained to us that our dog barks "continuously" "all day" and since the guy works nights, this would be understandably disruptive. However, our dog is only home alone between 9:00-11:00am 4 days a week while my husband is in class and between 4:30 and 5:30 3 days a week when he goes to work and I come home. Once a week our dog is is in daycare all day. He certainly doesn't bark when we're home.

We had him evaluated by our local humane society and they suspect he barks out of boredom. Frankly, we're doing all we can to correct this alleged behavior. We take him with us when we run errands and he seem to be fine for the hour or whatever hanging out in the car. We kennel him during the short periods we're gone because he occasionally has accidents. He always gets a frozen stuffed kong in his crate and he only ever eats from food dispensing toys. We have a yard that he can run around in a few hours a day. Recently we started leaving him out for the short periods we're gone and he doesn't seem to bark but now he digs.

There's only a few hours out of the day when he could possibly be disrupting anyone's peace. We rent a townhouse and share walls with this day sleeping neighbor which is part of the problem. They don't seem to like us much. One night their adult son came over drunk at 11:30pm to cuss us out about a citation they got from the city for their dog barking and he tried to blame our dog. We complained to the manager and since the man wasn't on the lease, he and his dog had to leave the property.

However, I still worry that our dog may in fact me barking for the short times we're gone and I don't want to be nuisance. On occasion I do hear him barking as I'm walking up to the door if he's kenneled inside but its not every time. I want a happy dog and happy neighbors and we're not really sure what else to do. We just don't have the resources to take him to day care more than once a week. We don't own a video camera. Short of bothering our other neighbors with questions, how are we supposed to know if the other neighbors are exaggerating or hearing a different dog (it seems like everyone on the block has a dog)? And if it is our dog, what else can we do to curb this behavior?

    • ANSWER:
Bark collar. And, borrow a video or audio recorder...

  36. QUESTION:
    Dog Territorial Barking Issue?
We have a 3-4 year old Rednose American Pitbull Terrier. We rescued Molly in November of 09 and it seems like we've had her since she was a puppy. She's the best dog we've ever had and wouldn't hurt a fly. We haven't had any problems with her up until recently. Now that the it's getting warmer, a lot of people are coming out walking alone or with their dogs. Either way, she goes insane! She doesn't show any aggression but she barks like crazy. She's went through our new screen door about 5 times now. We have this metal cover at the bottom that goes up about 3 feet so it's harder for her to get out but she still barges through. We like keeping the windows open for her but it's something we well......dread. She's an awesome dog and we love her to death and we really need some help with this. Any tips or training methods we could use? We would gladly take her to obidience if it's needed (: Thanks a bunch!

-Yes, we take her on walks everyday, play with her toys for 30 minutes to an hou,r and let her run around outside for a few hours everyday so I don't think think that excercise/mental stimulation is really an issue
Oh, and yes, we do have a fence but it's a 6 foot chain link; nothing that blocks her view :/

    • ANSWER:
I would absolutely take her to an obedience class before she gets worse. Not only will she get the up close socialization and training she needs but you will have the opportunity to learn methods that will help her focus on you rather than the distractions of other dogs. Make sure to alert the trainer to her problems before class, they might offer to work with you a few minutes before class to give you a few tips to help you get started. Good luck. Bully breeds like the pit need a firm but gentle hand and need problems addressed immediately before they become issues. You shouldn't have to much trouble though cos they are also smart as heck :)

  38. QUESTION:
How can I get my Toy Poodle to stop barking so much
I have a toy poodle that recently turned 2. She has been barking excessively for several months now. She sleeps in a crate, goes for 45 minute to 1 hour walks everyday, knows what "No!" means but she still barks. She has separation anxiety so when my boyfriend leaves her in his room by herself she starts barking like crazy and cries.

Whenever she hears a noise outside or someone coming up the stairs she barks. When I say NO she looks at me and makes noises and barks a little softer but continues to carry on . I know poodles are guard dogs but I've tried everything and nothing seems to work. I've held her mouth shut and scolded her but she continues to speak.

Anybody with suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The barking is the bigger issue here moreso than the separation anxiety. The only way I get her to relax a little is by giving her "CALM DOWN" medication which basically gets her sleepy.

    • ANSWER:
Try filling a spray bottle with water and whenever she barks, squirt her...When my dogs gets too excited or freak out i lay them down on thier sides and keep thier heads down on the floor till they calm down...thats what the mothers do to calm them down and it seems to work really well....Good luck!

  39. QUESTION:
How can I get my dog and kitten to get along?
I have a 1 1/2 year old pug who is very friendly with other animals, however she is sometimes a little TOO friendly. I recently brought home a 5-week-old kitten and I can't get them to behave for the life of me. The kitten is fine walking around the house, but my dog feels the need to act like the kitten is her own personal toy, chasing after her, barking at her, nipping her. How can I make this stop, outside of yelling at her? Should I place her in a separate room each time until she learns that she won't have this kitten to play with if she continues? It's incredibly frustrating.

    • ANSWER:
Naw just keep telling your puppy bad no no and love on the kitty and show him the kitty is nice. If that don't work the cat will scratch him once hope it not bad and he'll leave your kitty be at least not be so rough. Good luck!!

  40. QUESTION:
    My dog is ALWAYS barking?
I've had this dog for since she was a puppy. She's 9 years old and she's always barked, but lately her barking has just been getting on everyone's nerves. It won't stop and it's just continuous and my family, especially my mom, is sick of it. She barks both when she's inside and outside. She's a papillon.

I've read online the reason's a dog could be barking and none of these seem like the reason:

Warning/alert: There isn't any danger in our house or around it outside. We're kind of isolated and the few neighbors we have are quiet.

Anxiety: I don't see why she'd be anxious. She has food, water, etc. And it's not a whining type bark

Playfulness/Excitement: No one's down there with her. There's nothing to be excited about.

Attention-seeking: This is the only one I think could possibly be it, but I can't spend all my time downstairs with her.

Boredom/Lonliness: There's another dog down there with her, her "husband."

Needs exercise: We have a huge fenced in yard for her to run around in, but she doesn't like going outside.

Responding to other dogs: There aren't any other dogs barking.

My dog isn't allowed to come upstairs because every time she does she just goes around peeing on the rugs. We go downstairs and take a newspaper and slap it against out hand, which scares her and makes her stop for a while, but soon enough it starts up again.

She doesn't like to go on walks because she doesn't like the cold. She doesn't like being outside so when she's let out she stands on the deck, staring at the house while barking. She doesn't like toys. She just barks for no reason. Constantly.

We don't really have the money to go get a dog trainer or anything.

    • ANSWER:
Let's revisit two key parts of your list (Good solid post by the way)

"Attention-seeking: This is the only one I think could possibly be it, but I can't spend all my time downstairs with her."

Obviously but you can TRAIN her to not seek attention that way. This is more than likely it. There is a lot of mental energy that is not being burned off. Invest in some feeder toys and other enrichment items to turn mealtime into a mental challenge as well as provide other things to do

Boredom/Lonliness: There's another dog down there with her, her "husband."

"Needs exercise: We have a huge fenced in yard for her to run around in, but she doesn't like going outside."

I don't like to exercise either but it doesn't mean I don't need it. A yard is still a cage. A large percentage of what a dog gets out of a walk is not exercise but different sites, sounds, scents all while paying attention to the person on the other end of the leash. A lot of mental stimulation there. A yard, regardless of it's size, is still a cage. She's a small dog. Exercise indoors. Chase, Fetch, Tug there are a million things you can do but it WILL involve spending some dedicated time with your dogs each day. You can't just give a dog another dog as a toy and ignore them. You must meet their physical and mental needs. When you do, they will become calm and rest.

Now, while you're doing all of this, get a pop can, put some pennies or rocks in it and seal the top. This is called a "rattle can". Use it to startle/distract the dog every time it barks in the house for no apparent reason. EVERYONE must be involved and it must happen EVERY time. With that consistency the dog will learn that "every time I bark, it causes this annoying sound ergo, I will stop barking".

Oh, one key component. Don't yell at the dog to be quiet. All you're doing is titling the behavior. Use the rattle can and title quite when the dog stops barking. Like anything else we teach our dogs, we get the behavior first, then title it until they make the association. Only then can we ask for it. So by yelling "Quiet" at your dog, you're simply telling the dog that is what you are naming her barking.

  41. QUESTION:
Help Stop Dog Barking When I'm at Work?
I just heard from my landlord that my one year old dog is barking when I'm at work. He doesn't bark when I leave, it must be starting after I'm actually out of the apartment building. I leave him gated off in the kitchen with water, a long lasting treat treat, and chew toys, as well as his bed and puppy pads. I also walk him outside for 30 minutes in the morning before I go to work.

I've had him for about 4 months now and he just started this new behavior this week.

My main problem is that he's not barking when I am getting ready to leave or have actually walked out the door...it's starting about 10-15 minutes after I leave (I'm assuming that's when he's finished the treat that I give him).

Any suggestions? We've tried the kong toy to distract him, but when he's unable to get the kong treats out of it, he gives up.

  45. QUESTION:
Why are Pomeranians so possessive? Or is it just my dog?
My dog, Bailey, is very possessive over his toys. When he is on my lap, and our other dog walks by- he whines, barks and sometimes nipps. He is 6months old, and is also very possessive over his toys. Why? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Poms are totally posessive! They tend to bond especially close to one family member, and guard them non-stop. My step-mom has always had poms, and the females she has had wouldn't even let us by her chair when she was on her lap! I love 'em though. Sooo cute, but very yappy and stubborn. I'm not sure of a way to break it though, she has two now that are both that way. Maybe consult your breeder or a trainer. ADDED:
This is one of a long list of reasons it is best to get a puppy from a reputable breeder. They are excellent mentors for you and your first pup. I still send mine pics and Christmas cards and keep in phone contact.
      ADDED:
Never had any knee problems with any of our poms, just cancer in one, ut she was also 12 at the time. Hopefully his parents were certified???
PS- We lovingly call they "pomer-aliens" lol

  46. QUESTION:
    Dog Walking Troubles?
I have a one-year-old female English Bull Terrier named Lily. I got her on saturday afternoon, and I took her down to my friends house, which is along our street, through another, down the main street, through a couple more and you're there. She was fine; a bit slow and cautious, but fine. It's a fair old walk, too. So anyway, i brought her back, and she was more confident as we took the same route. So the next day i walked her i got her to the top of the street, and she didn't want to go any further (standing with her head down, tail between her legs, crying). So i took her home, and a couple of hours later me and my brother took her up the path near our house that leads to the front street. She was slow, but steady. We took her round and down into the street, and home. She didn't fuss, cry or bark her first night. She was as good as gold.

And then the other morning, i took her out. I eventually got her to the other side of the road, where she did her business and i picked it up, but i had to drag her (literally) around the corner to the dog bin. I brought her home, and she was alright. That was about 8:30 AM.

At about half 12, my friend came around. We walked her up the street with some difficulty, and she did her business once again. Between us, we managed to get her up a long stretch of street, and over near a field of horses (she was quite eager to see the horses). Then she wouldn't budge. So we took her back, and she was pulling on the leader like mad. She ws sticking her head through the fence to see a little labrador pup in the garden, and had a good sniff of a passing collie.

But every walk i've taken her on since she stopped, and wouldn't budge. It's not easy trying to drag an English Bull, trust me. I'll drag her so far, speak sternly to her, try and encourage her, but it does no good. i just look like an idiot. the only way she'll move is if i take her back. treats didn't even work. Sometimes i can get her right around the block, but most times she won't move on our street. i'm so irritated with her sometimes, and i just wish i could get it through to her to shift, but speaking to her does no good, and i wouldn't dream of hitting her; physical abuse is utterly no way to go about anything. Her previous owner didn't mention anything about her not liking walks (he's a very good friend, and he told us everything about her).

So i was wondering if there are any Bull Terrier owners out there, or indeed anyone who is well versed in walking stubborn dogs (Lily is sporadically stuborn, shes okay then shes not, and its not medical. Her pads are fine, as is her stomach, back, etc) who may have had this problem. I've tried her favorite toy and treats - to no avail. Should i just drag her and not look back, and make her come? Will that teach her?

    Please help!
    (Civil answers only, please)

    • ANSWER:
Not a bull terrier owner, but was a former dog trainer that dealt with breaking adult dogs of destructive behaviour! Maybe my suggestion would work here...

Two things come to mind--firstly, does your dog have bone problems? Has she been checked out thoroughly? If she is in excellent health then I suspect she wants to control the walk.

Try keeping a whole bunch of treats in your pockets--really small ones! If you see she is losing interest in the walk keep a piece in your hand low enough for her to smell it, have interest in it, and she'll follow you along until you give it to her. Don't reward her too often, of course, and don't make it a routine she can figure out. Keep her guessing!!

It may be the former owner was so REGIMENTED in the walks with her that she is having a hard time adjusting. Encouraging curiosity is critical, so consider bringing a favourite toy on your walks occasionally and play with it at different points. Just don't make it a "routine." You don't want to stress her out, either, by giving her zero routines....make sure the "I need a routine" is transferred somewhere else, say in your home (tugging after dinner--don't do a routine around your exit from your home or your arrival--it will generate separation anxiety!). So find out from the former owner if he was regimented in a routine.

      Best of luck!!

  47. QUESTION:
    Disobedient Dog Doesn't Stop Barking?
Okay..I just started seeing a girl about a month ago and she has a 2 year old terrier mix,and it is a HOLY TERROR.For the two years she owned the dog it was:

    -RARELY walked
    -Never crate trained
    -allowed to eat whenever
-left outside on the leash to use the bathroom twice a day
-chewed on anything and everything except it's chew toys
(only wants to chew personal belongings)
-urinated/defecated on the floor without punishment
-slept on the couch and in bed with her every night.

Now that I am at her house alot,I want to bring discipline to this dog.She might think its cute that the dog is super-attached,but its super annoying and aggravating.

What can I do to stop the dog from barking in its crate at night?I understand that has some anxiety being alone but it's getting out of hand,we have to put the crate and the bed end so she'll stop barking. Also she'll bark as soon as u walk in the house and leave her alone, but stops as soon as you walk out (she lays down when u come out after her)

    • ANSWER:
There are several different options for problem barking.

There is a surgery to "de-bark" a dog, but that can be quite expensive and is an extreme measure to take.

There are special collars that are activated by the vibrations caused by barking that will spray the dog in the face with either water, or sometimes a vinegar solution. Supposedly, this works wonders, and in my opinion, is the most humane remedy. My friend had a problem barker, and this fixed it up in no time. She says that after a week, the collar was no longer necessary.

There are also sonar devices available that are activated by barking and emit high fequency noises that only dogs can hear. There are also collars that will shock the dog.

These devices should only be used if behavioral conditioning fails. The dog could probably really benefit from a little discipline via training. You're gf is going to have to get on board with you though, or the dog will never learn.

      Good luck!

  48. QUESTION:
My dog barks and throws her toys at me when I wont play with her. What should I do?
I walk her every day and play with her a lot. It's not that I am neglecting her.
Some of you must not be able to read what I wrote after the question.
I have a huge backyard and she has a doggy door so she can go outside any damn time she pleases. As I said before, I play with her a lot and walk her every day.

    • ANSWER:
ignore her.....if u give her attention she may think that you'll give in so try not to pay any attention to her

  49. QUESTION:
My 6 month old toy yorkie is a turning into asbo dog! Help!?
She's 6 months, been scared stiff of other dogs out walking, until suddenly this week, she barks at them and chases them all of, german shepherds and boxers!! She sounds like she's gonna start fighting with every one that walks past. I am a bit worried, she's gonna come a cropper if I don't sort out her behaviour asap!

    • ANSWER:
This dog could threaten the wrong dog. You need to correct this behavior now. You never know when one of those shepherds or boxers is going to turn around and attack her in return. One bite and she would be gone. You need to correct her every time she shows aggression toward another dog. Her behavior probably is fear aggression, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous. For her own safety, you need to correct her.

  50. QUESTION:
My dog barks at everything that moves, even the tenants..?
My dog- Jack Russell X 1 and abit year old...
he barks at the birds that swoop down in our yard..
he barks when the tenants come out to the yard to hang their clothes on the clothes line..
he barks at the tenants that come home late at night..
and there have been complaints about his loud barks.
    we have tried everything..
we use to let him romp in the yard at night, and we now put him in his crate inside, but he barks at the sound of the door opening and he whines in the early morning, barks really loudly..
and have the whole streets dog start a dog choir..reall badd one too x.X
also, we have a muzzle to stop him from barking, but he can still whineand partly bark really loudly..
in fact, the only times he doesn't bark is when we walk him which is 3 times a day, each 15 mins long..once in the morning at 7 and one at the afternoon at 4pm and one at night at 7;30pm.
and other times are when we play with him which is between 4;30pm to 5;30pm and other times he just romps in the yard and barks his lil head off..
he has heaps of toys, but he can only play with them when we take off his muzzle, or he nips and bites the tenants and us and any other visitor..=S
i adopted him from a shelter, so there is no point telling me to give it to RSPCA and have him put down or w/e.
everyone tells me to blah go to Channel 7 and watch blah DOG WHHISPER.
    look, I CANT.
    He is desexed :)
    I said i ADOPTED HIM.
and i adopted him a month ago.
so how would i know when his previous owners started walking him?!?!
    um..
i tried the water nozzle spraying thing..
he just thinks its entertainment and laps it pu and trys to drink it.
My dog is very competitive, wen we meet dogs when walking, no matter what size, if its a guy, he would fight it and barks would start, if its a gir, he would try hump it, eveen though he is DESEXED.
Why the hell would i lie about adopting him??

    • ANSWER:
Go to obedience classes. If you don't want to invest in them, see if you can have a talk with a dog trainer about ideas on what to do. Dog trainers know how to deal with behavioral issues with dogs and you'll find that they have ways to fix these problems that you would have never thought of.
