     Barking is generally considered a normal behavior that most dogs display. Some breeds tend to bark more than others, and domesticated dogs seem to bark more frequently and for different reasons than wild dogs. Barking is, after all, a method by which dogs communicate with one another and with their human companions.
     However, dogs that bark in excess can become annoying or downright disruptive to the general peace. Some cities have ordinances to govern the barking of dogs and assess fines or other penalties to people who own dogs that bark excessively. Barking has even been known to cause neighborhood disputes and subsequent court battles.

     It is prudent, therefore, to learn how to control your dog's barking. To do so, it is important to understand the reasons that dog bark.

     Why Do Dogs Bark?
     We've identified seven general reasons for barking. Each generates a different kind of bark with a unique sound.

     1. Barking to induce play. This bark is generally muffled, with accompanying tail wagging and the characteristic crouching with head lowered to the ground, hindquarters raised. Dogs will stop barking as the play proceeds. If you do not play with the dog, the animal will eventually give up and stop barking.

     2. Barking to discipline young. This sound usually involves a snap and a sharp bark, uttered when puppies or younger dogs do something that irritates an older dog. The bark itself generally does not persist, as one or two warnings usually stop younger animals in their tracks.

     3. Barking to warn of danger. This is a deep, repeated bark. The dog's tail will be motionless or lowered to the ground and the dog's forelimbs will be widely spaced on the ground. The barking will generally persist until the source of danger is removed or until the dog is able to retreat to a position of safety.

     4. Barking to threaten intruders. This bark may include an angry growl. The dog may raise its hackles and the hair on its back and tail. The dog will plant all four feet squarely and assume a fighting stance. As the dog barks, the teeth and gums will be readily visible. To stop such a bark, you must either remove the intruder or remove the dog from the situation. Sometimes, stepping to the dog's side and assuring it that all is well will cause it to stop barking.

     5. Curiosity barking. In general, this bark is displayed when there is some activity near a dog, but in such a place where the animal cannot have a good look. It is as if the dog is saying, "Hey, what's up?" The dog will display excitement and tend to pace erratically with a slightly wagging tail. To stop the barking, all you have to do is let the dog see what it is curious about.

     6. Barking for companionship. This is an incessant, repetitive bark, accompanied by a relatively motionless tail and concentration toward the area most associated with the dog's owners. The solution to this type of bark is to spend more time with the dog and to allow the dog access to the area where humans spend their time. This bark is often displayed by dogs that are ignored, tied out by themselves or locked up alone.

     7. Barking for reward. Finally, dogs can be inadvertently trained to bark and will persist with remarkable resistance. Barking can become associated with almost any activity that leads to reward. For instance, a dog that barks at garbage trucks because they intrude within its territory will learn that persistent barking leads to the disappearance of the trucks. This rewards the barking behavior, and a cycle is begun that is difficult to break. Persistent barking can then generalize to other objects-school buses, neighbors walking by, children on the way to school, the paper boy, mailman, milkman and so on. To break the cycle, it is necessary to interrupt the natural system of reward.

     Solutions to Barking
     The first five reasons for barking are rarely the cause of "excessive" or "annoying" barking. They are usually specific to certain situations and short-lived.

     The sixth and seventh reasons are those most likely to be considered problem barking, and they are not unrelated.

     Barking for companionship can turn into barking for reward: The dog barks to get its owner's attention, the owner comes to the dog to tell it to be quiet, perhaps petting it or playing with it, and goes away again. The dog is quiet while the owner is there, but has learned that barking will bring the owner back. Thus the system of barking and reward is established.

     A solution, again, is to spend more time with your dog and have it near you rather than tied up somewhere separate from you.

     However, if your dog is separated from you and it begins to bark to get your attention, do not immediately go to the dog. It must learn that barking will not guarantee your presence.

     By spending more time with the dog at regular intervals not instigated by barking, your dog will feel more assured that it will get sufficient attention from you and will not have as much inclination to bark for companionship.

     How do you teach a barking dog to distinguish between friends and strangers?

     The solution is to show the dog that certain individuals (garbage collectors, mailmen, milkmen) are, indeed, friends.

     To accomplish this, the dog has to be introduced to these people and given an opportunity to get to know them. While this is not always practical, it is nonetheless a potential solution.

     As you restrain your dog, stop delivery people and have a short conversation with them, letting them meet the dog for a brief period. Repeat and lengthen the process over the next few weeks.

     Eventually, your dog should accept these individuals and all will be well until your regular mailman is sick and another takes his place.

     What do you do with a dog that barks at guests in your house?

     One solution is to take the dog to another room and give it something to do. Or, if the guest comes to your home often and you don't want to have to lock up the dog every time, work to gradually introduce one to the other. Have the guest get on his knees, pet the dog, offer it a treat, and more or less become part of the family. Let your dog establish the speed at which this relationship develops: Don't force it, or your dog may become alarmed by a "pushy" guest.

     How do you deal with a dog that barks at the phone?

     This is simply a case of a dog that has been reward- ed for barking at the phone ringing. When the dog barks, someone even- tually answers the phone and it stops ringing. To stop your dog from doing this, have a friend call and let the phone ring until the dog loses interest. Continue over a period of days, and in time the dog will learn that barking at the phone ac- complishes nothing.

     Finally, what do you do with the dog that barks while you are away from home?

     There are several possible solutions. One is to act as if you are leaving, then stand outside the door until the dog barks. When it does, return and scold it verbally. Another is to get your dog a cormpanion - but you might end up with two barkers!

     A third is to use a sound-activated tape recorder. When the dog barks, the sound switch turns on the tape recorder for a minute. The tape plays your voice scolding the dog. Some systems can repeat as many as 45 times while you are away.

     The best way to reduce your dog's barking is to pay attention to the reasons for the bark. If you can satisfy the dog's needs, barking will automatically be reduced. By the same token, learned barking can be extremely persistent. Internal rewards can cause the cycle to go on for years. The best solution is prevention, so be aware of the possibilities and work to stop problem barking before it starts.

   hi, I have a pomeranian who barks non-stop. I give him treats when he is quiet, but he still barks whenever I leave the room. Is there some advive on how to make him stop barking as much?

     First thing is to figure out WHY he barks. Chances are that your pomeranian is rather spoiled, that he thinks he's the boss in the house. When you leave the room, he gets frantic, because he thinks he's supposed to take care of you, and when you're gone, he doesn't know what happened to you and he can't protect you. Think of how a mom or dad would feel if their child went somewhere and they didn't know where he was and couldn't take care of him because he was gone.

     So you have to teach the dog that he isn't the boss of the house. You have to teach him that you are the boss of HIM.
     There are three "MUST READ" books you can probably get at Amazon.com. They will teach you how to be the boss of your dog while still being kind and loving to him.

     1. The first is "The Dog Whisperer" by Cesar Millan. Teaches you how to be a pack leader.

     2. The second is "The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell. Teaches you how to get willing cooperation from your dog.

     3. The third is "The Art of Raising A Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete. Teaches you how to get a puppy started right as a member of your pack.

     And finally, make sure your dog gets lots of exercise. Take him for walks several times a day. He can walk for 5 minutes for each month of his life up to about 12 months, but because he's such a little dog, don't walk him for much more than that in any one walk.

     And keep on giving him treats when he stops barking. Never yell at him, because he'll think you're barking back at him. Don't overdo the treats, though, or he'll get fat. Start out by giving him a treat when he first stops barking, then increase the time by 5 seconds at a time, so that after about a week, you're giving him a treat about 15 seconds after he stops barking and after two weeks, you're giving him a treat 30 seconds after he stops barking. After that, mix it up. Sometimes give him the treat right away, sometimes after 10 seconds, then after 20, then after 10, then after 30, then right away, and so on.

     But do remember that Pomeranians are barkers. Most of them bark almost all the time.

      It sounds like there might be a dominance problem. Are they both the same sex and not spayed? Is there other dogs around your house that bark too? My dogs bark a lot when the others get going outside and if they bark inside they get popped on the nose and told no.       This is a case of "when the cat's away the mice will play".
      You aren't right there to give the correction for the bad behavior, so he goes right back to his old ways.
      Also, "pack mentality" in dogs tells them being left behind is a bad, bad thing. Remember, he doesn't understand, "I'll be right back". He's acting out a little in frustration and fear.

      What to do?
      Pretend to walk away, wait for the bad behavior, and give a correction. Perhaps a friend could hold the leash and give the correction, but only if he misbehaves with the friend.

      Someone mentioned a toy to keep him occupied, that's a great idea.
      Look up the "guard" command. It's not for every dog, but it could distract him by giving him a "job" while you're gone.

      Yes, barking is a natural form of behaviour, but dogs need to learn WHEN to bark, esp if they living in YOUR house.
      What you do( & this may sound cruel, but believe me it's not!) each time they bark, you need to chuck them with something that will startle them.In other words, you're wanting to create a startled response at the exact moment the dogs bark, so that they can make the association:each time i bark, this thing comes from no where, therefore i'll avoid barking at a specific thing.The other imp. thing is that they mustn't see it coming from you!

      They act to distract the dog from it's barking but it is a temporary measure. If the whistle is noisy, your neighbors can file a complaint for the same noise ordinance violation you should be doing, so be sure to use a dog whistle whose tone is indiscernable to the human ear.

      Can you direct the neighbors to a trainer or offer them alternatives towards training their dog not to bark? You mentioned in your previous post that you didn't know if they just didn't care or know how to stop the problem. Offering them a solution is your first step in resolving the issue. If that fails, then your next step is to file a complaint for violating the noise ordinances in your area. Document the problem both in a log and with a camcorder for evidence.

      Wow i am sorry your going thru this with your dog and your parents are trying to shock him into submission.Dogs bark as that's how they express their selves' but shocking and hitting would make him mean and not trust anyone again.He has been thru hell with his other owners and i thank God he had you to look after him.I rescued a poodle that had 2 broken legs and had been screamed at so much he was a nervous wreck.He lived a great life and laughed yes laughed and lived 4 ys till he died of heart failure.I am so glad he had a nice life after going thru hell with his demon owners' before me. edit..       Correction and redirection.

      First question: do you want the dogs to bark at all? A warning bark? Or none?

      Have someone you know help you out - they ring the bell and when the dogs bark (have them on a leash) you find something they dislike. A spray with a water bottle, a loud noise, anything that distracts them. Praise when they go quiet and bring them to greet the visitor.

      Sometimes a toy or treat will get their attention - throw one when the bell rings after you correct the bark. Let them have a chewie if you know someone is coming over. My dog usually goes nuts for doorbells but if she has her rawhide she won't budge.

      Bark collars are last resort. I would look into regular obedience training. It will help.

      I learned this really great trick recently, and it works on my dog because she hates water. What you do is as soon as they start barking (not after they stop) you spray them in the face with a water bottle. It sounds mean, but it's not. Just give them a little squirt and my dog shuts up and runs away. Give it a try!

      Is the neighbour who says she's never heard anything just being nice? You must ask somebody else who you know will give you an honest answer. Its very possible that the little mites feel abandoned by you when you are out and they are locked outside. I just hope they have shelter, food and water and enough space to play safely.
      It needs stopping now though, if your neighbour is getting really p'd off with the constant yapping/barking - they might try poisoning your dog.

      Clearly your dog is best suited as an 'only' dog and feels his position as the #1 dog in the house is threatened by the arrival of the new one. Try paying more attention to him for a while and always make sure that if you are doing something with both dogs (like feeding) make sure you give the older dog his food first Same for treats. That way you will be reinforcing the "alpha dog" position. That might help.

      Dogs bark because they mistakenly think they have to defend the home against possible attack. It is quite normal but unaceptable behaviour which needs to be trained out of them by positive reinforcment.

      So the question becomes how do we do it. lol

      Well actually its realy quite simple.

      Firstly get some turkey meat, I recomend one of them turkey rolls. Take off the fat and roast it then cut it into one cm cubes and put say 30 or 40 cubes in a plastic bag. the rest in the freezer or fridge.

      Now, reconditioning, its going to take time and patience.

      A dogs hearing is around four times more sensitive than a humans so shouting is pointless. Keep a very calm demena and talk quietly as if to a four yearold child in normal voice not baby talk.

      The word NO means nothing to a dog. logically speaking NO 'What'. So the command must be 'Quiet' phonicaly its unique and it works well.

      Now your ready for training, if the dog barks when somone knocks on the door place yourself between the dog and the door, gain its attention and look straight into its eyes and point one finger at it, then say in a normal but firm voice 'quiet' - do not growl it or shout it.

      You may have say it several times before the dog stops barking. As soon as it stops barking give it a piece of turkey and lots of praise with a gentle approving voice and a stroke. If it starts barking again, return your hand to the command position and make eye contact and then say firmly in a normal voice 'quiet' again.

      Repeat the above as often as necessary until all that it takes to shut him up is a gentle 'quiet' from you in any situation.

      Barking is instinctive for them. It's their "job" to protect the family by, at least, allerting them to danger.

      BUT!
      For some dogs, it almost becomes a syndrome. A neurosis, if you will.
      Non-stop barking is a sign of boredom, lack of exersize, natural/inbred nervousness. Some dogs just don't know any better. They haven't been trained what to do, so they over react.
      Plus, it's fun for dogs to run barking at every little thing. If you yell and chase them, that's all the more fun. They think you are barking with them. They have no idea that you're upset.

      First thing to try is more exersize. Tired dogs are quiet dogs.

      Try only paying attention to her when she's quiet. At random times in the day WHEN SHE'S QUIET say "good (use the dog's name) no barking!". Even if you have to wait until she's eating or sleeping. Catch her being quiet and praise her.

      Ignore barking.
      Leave the room if possible.

      Put 12 pennies (or pebbles) in a soda can and tape the lid shut. When she starts up. Shake the can sharply. It will startle her momentarily- AS SOON AS SHE SHUTS UP, PRAISE HER!!! If she ignores the can, toss it in her direction. Don't pelt her with it. You don't want to hurt her. It will seem like a "bomb" has gone off next to her and she will (hopefully) quit for a second.

      Their are collars you can try. Some squirt a smell dogs don't like. Others shock them with electricity. Some have remote controls, others just let the dog bark 2-3 times before it zaps them.
      Make no mistake. "Tough nuts" won't quit without painful aversion therapy.

      There is a surgery. Cutting the vocal cords will make her quieter, but she will still bark. It will sound like coughing. It's dangerous, expensive, and difficult to find a vet that will do it.

      Some breeds are barkers. Jack Russels and Rat Terriers. Pomeranians. Dachunds. Just to name a few. If you have one of these, seek professional help. You need a trainer.

      I also have a miniture pinscher who looks like she was going to be quite the barker. What we did was got a soda can and put about pennies in it and duct tapped the top. Anytime she barked we would shake the can and she would stop instantly. I know they say you can clap to stop behavior but it honestly didn't even phase her. Now if she starts and even sees the can she will stop. I am not sure if it will work for your dog as mine is a puppy but its worth a try. Good Luck!

      You can get a device called a "barker breaker". It emits a sound that dogs don't like when the bark. It will work on your dog AND your neighbors too!
      A google search shows there are lots of stores that sell it. I had one for my neighbor's little yapper and it worked great. The only problem is the one I bought was not waterproof and it died when it got wet. I believe there is a waterproof model, but it's a bit expensive if I remember correctly.

      If you are using an electric collar that must be manually activated, you cannot make accurate corrections, and the dogs will not learn to stop barking.

      If you have a collar that activates when the dog barks, the dog still needs to learn what the correction means, it may take a while. A bark collar will work only if used properly. It must be VERY snug, high on the dogs neck, as close to the jaw as possible without strangling the dog.

      You should experiment with the correction level to make sure that the correction is high enough to discourage the dog from barking.

      I use a tri-tronics model, and it is very effective. My dogs know when it is on, and they do not bark.

      There are other alternatives:

      1) There are devices that you can put up that emits an ultrasonic sound (that only dogs can hear) when the dogs bark. The sound is supposed to distract them and change the behavior. Check out Bill Boatman's in Ohio.

      2) You could put them in crates in your basement during the day while your are gone. They may still bark, but they won't be as easily heard, and eventually they will calm down in their crates, and feel more secure. Part of their barking is insecurity, plus, it is also nice to have your pets in the house.

    We adopted a small older (5-8 y/o) Chihuahua mix rescue a few months ago. She's the sweetest little thing to US, but doesn't like some men and some dogs (usually bigger than her; she's been OK with some smaller dogs). She growls, barks, jumps up, and pulls when she sees a dog or man she doesn't like. I've posted about her before; I think the problem is she wasn't properly socialized.

    She is NOT aggressive in the sense that she doesn't bite. Just the growling and barking.

    We had her on a harness when we noticed this behavior. I've since switched her to a pinch collar (a "Small" - I had to take out 3 links). Since she's smaller (14 lbs), I give her a little tug and say "no" when she growls or barks, but this hasn't helped. She actually jumps still, and I don't think she's phased by the pinch at all (she's very good with it when I use it to help her learn to "heel").

    I've gone through dog obedience training in the past, so I know the basics at least, and am training her at home on other things. I just haven't had to train a dog who's had these problems.. (Note: In the future I will take her to obedience classes to socialize her more, but that's not an option at the moment.)

    Now what? I've seen collars that sense when the dog is going to bark and then emit a lemon-scented spray to stop it... or do I go the shock collar route? I'm usually against the latter, since I think it can be cruel. I don't want to traumatize her...

    I would appreciate the responses of EXPERIENCED people who have dealt with a similar problem with their dogs... I don't need anyone telling me I'm cruel or anything. Thanks.

      Don't know why you would think anyone would call you cruel...you are trying to do the best you can for a dog you rescued...way to go! First, I really dislike prong collars..have you tried a martingale or slip lead? When she does this unwanted behavior...can you see an warning signs...does her back stripe, ears go forward, does she feel tense? Can you tell if the dog or human is making eye contact or otherwise making your dog feel threatened? Using a slip lead high on the neck the way they do at the dog shows, you can try the change direction maneuver if you notice the warning signs. Also, I have had success with teaching my dog to bark on command so that I could teach him the quiet command. If you can get the other people to cooperate, try doing a "meet and greet". Try to keep your dog calm and approach the offending party...stop at about 3 feet away and have your dog sit and ignore. Just briefly chat with the person. If you tell them you are in training, you will be amazed how helpful they will be. I think you have the right idea, you need to do this as a training exercise every day! One last word...about ecollar...I have used this for the last 8 monhs with my pit hound mix and I love it. It is not cruel or painful..like anything else it needs to be learned and used properly. Anyway, there are a lot of training methods out there, not every one is the right one for every dog! I hope my suggestions were helpful, good luck.

      When your dog barks or growls during walks, snap his lead and say "No" firmly (don't yell). Have the collar up high on his neck and snap the lead, redirecting him when he starts growling or barking. If you can watch your dog and see the signs before he growls or barks, it's even better. This redirection lets him know you're in control. If you do this everytime, he'll learn. It'll take about a week of walking and correcting for him to get the message. Do not give him treats or rub him and give affection when he growls or barks. You're telling him this is good behavior when you do that. Good Luck!

      As I've been trying to convey to everyone that is asking this question...a method that worked for me really well, with no hitting or screaming or abuse of any kind.
      Simply take an empty soda can, put some small stones or pennies inside, and seal it with duct tape You may want to make one of these for each room in your home, because it's a good correction for many bad habits, including chewing, etc.
      Anyway, let your dog bark when someone knocks or first comes in...it is trying to alert you to them, and it's called "protective barking". Then, after a few barks, immediately, in a firm voice,tell them "No! Stop it!" and give the can a few shakes. The unusual noise startles them, and they usually stop for a bit, anyway. Then, when they start again, repeat the same procedure. If after a time they bark again, it's time to drop the can beside you, (do not throw it!), and give the same command. The noise is louder and startles them again.
      I know this works because our little Shih Tzu was a real 'yapper' and barked at anything and everything. (Sometimes the smaller the dog the more they bark out of fear). So now, all I need to do is say "I'm gonna get my can!" and she looks to where the one remaining one is and shuts up right away.

      Don't spray water or anything else in your dogs face when barking. That may only make him fearful of water and of anything in your hand. You don't want a fearful dog, just a calm and peaceful dog that you can control with words and not action.

      I would consistantly give the dog a verbal and physical correction everytime the behaivor starts. When the dog is quiet while in the presence of other dogs, the behavior you are trying to encourage, its time time to give lots of praise. Most dogs only get away with what the owners allow them to get away with.

    It's worse when they see a dog go past when they're upstairs as they run onto the verandah and go nuts! Barking really loudly and running all over the verandah - which sounds loud from my granny flat as it's right underneath.

    So my question is - how do I explain to the Owners nicely that their dogs' barking is a nuisance without getting their noses out of joint? As the owners just let the dogs bark - only occasionally giving them a slight reprimand in a gentle voice - which of course the dogs just ignore!

    I should mention that the dog's behaviour is pretty good besides the barking (apart from the Staffy jumping up and dragging your washing off the line when she's bored!)
